help with dyslexia please

DS age 7 has been tested for dyslexia and we have been advised to get a special eye test. Does anyone know anything about eye testing for dyslexia?

My DD is 7 and has just been diagnosed with dyslexia (sorry according to the report a specific learning difficulty, saves the council money if they do not mention word dyslexia!!) and I have also been advised to see a optician, they can give them tinted glasses to wear, I have been to the British dyslexia association and ordered some overlays first to see if this helps, but also look up behavioral optometry which is a new thing I have got to look into it myself, I don't know where about's you are but there is a lady in St Neots in Cambridgshire who has trained in Scandanavia who is meant to be really good. Hope this helps I feel like I am constantly banging my head against a brick wall trying to get help!!

There are lots of behaviour optometrists around the country. Look at the BABO website to find one near you. A standard optician does not look for many eye problems. My DS (7) is being assessed for dyslexia, I took him to a behaviour optometrist on a hunch and she has picked up on quite serious vision problems (such that she is amazed he can read at all) which a high street optician has missed in 4 separate eye tests.

Two of our children are dyslexic. The eye test is probably for convergency deficiency not as bad as it sounds, it means the eyes don't track words evenly ie you may have a problem trying to go cross eyed ! This is a common problem with dyslexics and cloured sheets help along with exercises. It is usually done in the hospital by their optometrist, so at least you won't get ripped off. Both my children and myself have this problem and the worse bit is getting them to do their eye exercises which are painless but a bit odd! Good luck just pm if you want further info
