I started a thread with this name about 18 mths ago. My ds is 5next week and still can't say the letter l and there has been no improvement. Can't wait for him to sing Away in a Manger at the Nativity on Friday with the line 'little Lord Jesus'!!
Last time i was reaasured that it would come, but hasn't.
Is it time to access help, and if so , how? Do I go to my GP first?

Haven't got an answer for you but am curiousmy DS is a similar age and can't say 'ch', or 'r' wellas in, 'shockolate biscuit' and 'vewwy good'and I was wondering if it would just improve with age or whether I should find an HV (they're a little hard to locate in my area) or whether he'd just grow out of it...

DS2 (just short of 4) can't say k or g. I removed him from SALT a while ago- after conversation with his SALT. I did check with ds1's SALT last week whether it was still within the normal range and she said "completely".

What does he say instead - is it "r" Try showing him (but not hassling him) to use his tongue. Don't put him under any pressure though.

My DS is 4y 3m and can't say 'y' but says 'l' instead, as in "I love lou" or "Les, I am coming". What does your DS substitute?

littledonkeyrach · 07/12/2005 11:46

Singersgirl, DD1 has exactly the same as you ds!!

Does make me chuckle sometimes, though it can make it hard to understand her.

DS2 (5 next March) says W for R and struggls with... racks brains... J (has improved a lot recently), QU (more of a KL) and a couple of other blends.

I'm working on R with him at the moment by emphasising that it's like grrrr. I think this one is easyish to sort out as it's a "simple" matter of getting him to understnad the shape his lips should make. (Have I mentioned the classic "W is for Wino!" incident recently?)

I'm not really worried yet because none of his teachers are and he does seem to be slowly improving with some of his problem blends.

My ds says y instead of l. His speech is perfectly clear apart from this. So we will be hearing about 'yittle yord Jesus'

My Ds is 4.5 and has an excellent command of the english language, however.........Fomas Fank Finks, should I get this looked at or let it go for the time being ??

You could try getting hime to pretend to lick a lolly and when the tongue is out as if licking say le, le, le, and bring the tongue up towards your top lip.

Wouldn't worry too much about it, my ds is 6 and he could never manage his r's and would use a w instead, he then got better as he approached 5 but then got mixed up with his r's and s's he would say things like rausage for sausage and his best one when his dad had a can of coke he said rola lola for coca cola. Ds says all his words perfect now but I have written all the words down that he struggled with, and boy what a laugh I get when looking over them. Dd is 21/2 and seems to have a bit of a lisp its so cute but hopefully will grow out of it eventually.
