Good book about puberty for 8 yr old?

I'd like to get a book about puberty for DD1, whose 8.5 and just going into Yr 4. We are fairly open talking about sex, babies, bodies, periods etc, but I'm not sure that she realises properly that her own body will start changing in just a couple of years (or even sooner). I'd like to get her a book so I can talk to her about it a bit more.

I'm sure there are great books on this subject, and probably also some awful ones, so I thought I'd tap the collective wisdom of MNetters on the subject!

I got my dd the usborne book called What's happening to Me it's really good and there are differen ones for boys and girls. However both books have a short one page bit on the opposite sex and it discusses everything from spots to periods to bullying

We have Hair in Funny Places. It has some funny pictures and descriptions and keeps the whole thing light-hearted.

We have both versions of What's Happening to Me? (for boys and girls) and I would definitely recommend them. Good, clear, age-appropriate explanations, IMO. DD is eight now, but first read the girls' one a couple of years ago.

My DD is exactly the same age (and is showing signs of developing already Shock :()

I was recommended this one and this one on here and they are both good. Much more age appropriate for an 8 yr old than some of the others that seem to assume make-up and boyfriends are involved too!

I was given Let's Talk about Sex when I was about the same age as your DD, and I used it as a reference until I was about 15.
The thing which made it stick in my mind, more than the books we had at school, is that it had a full page of naked (cartoon) people, fat, disabled, skinny, all different colours etc with a range of penis/boob sizes which was alot more comforting to look at when I hadn't sprouted boobs than porn!

I think Let's Talk About Sex is a bit mature for an 8yo! I just gave it to my 11.5yo recently and I think he's barely mature enough for it.
"Hair in Funny Places" (Babette Cole) is perfect for most 8yos; is a well-thumbed book in our house.

my mother got me have you started yet about 20 odd years ago, when I was about 10. I think kids are a bit more grown up now, so it might be good for your DD. I remember it made me feel quite grown up but it wasn't scary. It's all about puberty changes rather than sex per se. I remember pictures of old fashioned looped sanitary towels and asking my mother for them Hmm. She showed me the tampax and told me they were much nicer!

Thanks for all of these suggestions - I'll check them out.
