The baby voice is driving me insane! How to get rid of it??

Ds1 is 4.5 yeras old and started talking in a baby voice a month or so ago. SOmetimes this actually includes talking like a baby (me want this) and other times it is just the tine of his voice and not what he is saying. He is an extremely articulate and verbal child (something most people comment on straight away when meeting him) so this is particularly galling to me.

I think it may have started at nursery. He is the oldest one there now and lots of toddlers. He is stopping going there after this week, so hopefully that will help. But how can I stop him?

I have tried telling him off, ignoring it, telling him I won't listen to him or answer him until he talks in a normal voice, etc etc. Nothing works.

Help!!!

It really grates on you doesn't it. I hate it when DD puts on a baby voice and pulls what she thinks is a cute baby face (much pouting and thumb sucking)

WigWamBahhumbug · 04/12/2005 20:22

My friend got over this by not making a fuss, but pretending she could only hear her son when he spoke in a normal voice. If he asked normally, he was listened to, but if he put on the baby voice she acted as if she were deaf. It didn't take long for him to work it out.

ds2 does it as well (it is from nursery in his case). I refuse to answer him when he calls me "mama"

My DS1 (5) doesn't do a baby voice but he is speaking in a horrible, affected combination of every regional accent you can think of. I pretend I can't understand him, which seems to be helping

tensing · 04/12/2005 22:47

My two youngest both do this occasionally, either baby vioce or strange accents, I just ignore the request till its said properly

A friend of ours started doing this in his 30's after becoming a father. He talked in a baby voice to his dd aged 2 and also to our ds's who were 5 and 3 and not impressed. The funniest thing was when his dw remarked drily, "you can stop talking like that now, the children have left the room."

spidermama · 04/12/2005 23:08

My ds did this. It's really annoying isn't it. DH used to point it out to him whereas I used to ignore it. It stopped, but I'm still not sure why. It probably ran its course.

BluStocking · 04/12/2005 23:20

DS does this too. Drives me mad. It is a nursery 'thing' I think. Like phrases like 'googoo head'. I do my best to completely ignore it, but it takes all my patience!

Why IS it so irritating?

Arabica · 05/12/2005 21:02

My DS (5 in April) does this too, his best friend has a 2 year-old brother who gets attention and applause when he says a new word, so DS thinks he should get the same when he speaks the same way...it's REALLY annoying!

justacigar · 06/12/2005 19:10

mine still do it at 6.5 and 4.5. they know I hate it though, which is probably why they do it. I'm assuming they won't still be doing it at 18. .

SpaGlorytoBlog · 07/12/2005 14:04

The most frustrating thing is when another child's mother asks your child a question and they start talking with the most unintelligable baby voice.
As my DD did today

Thingamibob · 07/12/2005 14:05

don't understand him

I'm sorry I don't understand can you use your proper voice please

and walk away

bosscatsroastingonanopenfire · 07/12/2005 14:38

I'd ignore it completely. its bound to be just a phase. all the advice about only answering when they speak normally. My ds1 decided his dad's works christmas childrens party was the time to start calling us by our first names. (he's 3). it was soooooo embarrassing and I don't know what possessed him. He wasn't even laughing but saying it seriously so it looked like we encourage him to do that.
