Is this OK? 19 months old and not talking

My daughter is 19 months old.

She doesn't talk at all

No mummy or daddy.

She does babble and is otherwise very bright and alert. I am sure she has no hearing difficulty

She has just said ba-ba for bye bye but only once and just this week and theres a type of consonant p that comes out when we ask her to say please but that's the closest she's come.

Her older sister was talking by 18 months - like 2 words together so am slightly worried and want to know if I should be

I don't think that's anything to worry about. dd just used to babble at that age with the ocasional word.

Thingamibob · 04/12/2005 08:49

The thing is I ask if its OK but I know in my heart its not. I just can't shake the feeling there is something wrong here and I should be doing something about it

My ds2 has just turned 20 mths and does'nt say a thing. He'll say "Mam mam mam" or "Ba ba ba" (normal baby babble) but apart from that nothing. My ds1 was speaking in sentences (albeit small ones) by this stage. It bothered me at first but not anymore. He does everything else he's meant to (plus more for his age) so as far as I'm concerned, they'll do it when they're ready. Try not to worry so much. I'd personally be worried if they did'nt do anything.

coppertop · 04/12/2005 08:56

As long as she is able to let you know what she wants, eg pointing at things, then I would say she is okay. Health Visitors and GPs generally don't even consider referring a child for extra help until the child is at least 2yrs old.

dot1 · 04/12/2005 08:59

Now my ds1 is 4 I wouldn't be worrying at all - he had only word at this stage. He only really started talking after turning 2 - 2.5. But he clearly understood stuff we were saying - could point to the right things in books etc. At the time I was worried he was behind, but at just turned 4 his sentences are amazing - hugely complex and a fab vocab - although he's still v. quiet at nursery and pre-school and won't say much in front of other people unless he has to. He's basically very shy. Is your dd generally on the quiet, shy side?

SenoraPostrophe · 04/12/2005 09:01

dd started talking properly at about 2.5 too (well - more proper words at 2, 2 words at about 2.5).

she never stops now.

annobal · 04/12/2005 19:47

DH didn't start talking 'til he was 2.5 - never stops now (in fact I think he's talking to me now...)

ImdreadinganAUTIExmas · 04/12/2005 20:07

If she's pointing out things of interest she's fine.

MarsyChristmas · 04/12/2005 20:15

DT2 is almost 22months and he's not talking. DT1 talks for the United Kingdom.

Not at all worried about DT2. He'll talk when he's ready.

Don't worry, they all develop at different rates. DS1 was talking in sentences at 18months. DD1 was 20 months, DD2 about 19 months, DT1 at 19 months and DT2 will probably wait until he's 20 (years old that is!) lol

snowfalls · 04/12/2005 20:23

My DTS will be 2 tomorrow, and apart from ' hiya' it has only been in the last 6 weeks that their speech has started. In the last 6 weeks they have learned to say;
mumma
daddy
stop it
bye
hello
see you later
beep beep
sorry

No stopping them now

FrostyTheGloworm · 04/12/2005 20:28

our first baby had a fair few words by 12 months

our second baby is only really starting to talk at 24 months

I suppose what I mean is that all babies are different and develop at defferent rates. as long as there are no obvious problems such as hearing problems I wouldnt worry.

sasa15 · 04/12/2005 20:34

I think is normal for some babies be advance in something and be behind in other at this age.
Ds talking a lot and clear at 16 months...
but not walking...so...
someone told me that they have their own time for things....
ds doesn't make long sentences...but yes say a lot of words...since 2 months now...

but not much sign of walking in his own....so

once he will start walk he'll probably run straight away...

the same for your baby..once she talk that's it she will say all in once!!

motherinfurrierfestivehat · 04/12/2005 20:37

How do you feel she understands communication as opposed to speech? My younger daughter didn't get the hang of talking for ages but she clearly understood communication; she just wasn't articulating the words. I did worry a bit (and posted on MN) but not that much...and now she's two and a half she's chatting away and away and away.

ImdreadinganAUTIExmas · 04/12/2005 20:41

Eaxactly, waving, pointing, pointing and poiinting far more important than speech.

motherinfurrierfestivehat · 04/12/2005 20:44

Yep, DD2 clearly got the hang of the whole idea. Especially Imperious Commands.

SpringCrimboTurkey · 04/12/2005 20:44

DP and I were just talking about this today. Our DD is nearly 18 months and apart from Dada, mama, baba, ta, general baby babble she doesn't say any words.
Niece and nephew from DPs side were both talking in sentences at 15 months yet nephew on my side couldn't talk in clear sentences until he was nearly 5.
We try and repeat the same word over and over for about a week to see if she picks it up - if not we move on to something else.
We get a very mumbled version of "clifford" now
