dd won't get off bum to crawl

I'm bit worred. my 8.5 dd likes to sit and reach for toys but she won't crawl. If she's sitting she'll stay sitting. for ages. If we put toys slightly out of reach she may get them but if it's too much of a stretch she won't care. If we put her on ha belly she will roll around all over.

i m worried she isn't crawling? Is this a problem

My eldest bum shuffled at 10 months, cruised at 11, first steps at 11.5 and crawled at 12. At 13 months she started walking all the time. She's not dyspraxic and has no problems with reading etc. Quite the opposite. My second didn't crawl properly until 12 months either but was very mobile commando crawling, rolling and on his back propelling himself with his feet before that. I can't remember what age that started. From observation of babies I've known over the years I'd say 10 months is average to crawl so I definitely wouldn't worry yet.

Sorry, worldatlas. Didn't mean to panic you. For every parent of an 8 month old who is unnecessarily panicking, there will be the parent of an 8 year old saying "why did no one tell me at the time about crawling, when I could have done something about it". You can't win!

No, you don't need special crawling toys. I'm sure that you can improvise something (not least your own body, as sugessted by the healthvisitors).

If it is any comfort, dyspraxia is statistically much more likely in boys than girls.

Also do not Google Dyspraxia, as most who are labelled as such are not as bad as the ones I found on my last google search! (Used to be clumsy child syndrome.)
I would encourage crawling, but don't panic if they don't. BTW my middle one didn't move until after 1 year, then bottom shuffled, seemed ready to walk at 18 months, but then crawled for one month before walking.

Senua I really do think you're getting confused with correlations! Not crawling is related (slightly) to a small chance of dyspraxic problems in later life. This does not mean it CAUSES it, it's a correlation not cause and effect. It is much much more likely to be due to a third reason causing both. Teaching a child to crawl (however you do that..) is completely unnecessary.

I appreciate you have had problems with your child which must have been difficult, but I think that is colouring your advice here. The majority of 8 month olds are not yet getting around!

I never crawled, I shuffled but not much, I liked to just sit and play. I walked at 17 months. The myths regarding reading and writing and failure to crawl have been dispelled. I was top of the class for reading and now have 2 degrees! I think as previously mentioned failure to crawl does not cause dyspraxia, rather that those who have dyspraxia were unable to crawl - due to the dyspraxia. My DS will be a bum shuffler, if he ever moves!
