Concentration

My 10 year old son has problems with concentration. He is extremely bright and academically has no difficulty apart from being able to focus. I am struggling to balance trying to get him to be more independent and responsible for himself given that he will going to high school next September and avoiding conflict/nagging etc. Have tried rewarding/punishing/star charts (he forgets to add the stars) Any ideas of how to tackle this?

What would happen if you dropped the nagging/rewarding/punishing/star charts and just exposed him to the direct consequences of his own actions or inactions? Is there some way you could practise an independence skill he will need at secondary school - like a short journey to the shops to prepare for the journey to the school and handling money? To improve his concentration, does he have any interests you could encourage him to take further that would make concentrating on something seem more obviously beneficial to him? (I nag my children all the time and have never found star charts remotely useful - you are not alone!).

Have you tried the Omega 3 route? I've just started DS1 on it (2 days ago) and am hoping that it'll improve his concentration span.

Have you tasted it though? Bleeuugghhhhh. After the first twist off tail fish shaped capsule had had it's guts spurted into DS1's waiting mouth (thought it was a great game) came the words "give it to matthew" (ds2). Which means don't like it give it to him
