Writing own name for first time ...

Dd's just turned 3. She's verbal and imaginative but not that bothered to explore motor skills like drawing, building etc. Yesterday at playgroup she 'wrote' her name for the first time - it was backwards and upside down but if you turned the paper the wrong way round it was pretty good. She thinks it was pants and won't try again so I'm not pushing her. Here I just wondered if anyone had any tips to help her get things the right way round. And also curious to know when your little ones first 'wrote' their names. And how they did it.

TIA

Wow, I'm amazed how many kids are writing at such a young age!

Nb on this name thing - give yr child a short name!
I recall ds1's friend Eve writing her name on her work at nursery so easily.
Another friend is Alexandra - even at 4+ you could see she just got fed up of writing the card/ran out of room, bless her.

I am amazed and impressed. I don't remember how old DS1 and DD were when they wrote their names but I would guess closer to 4. DS2 is obsessed with letters and writing (now 3 years and 9 months) and he started writing his name (Alex) at the end of the summer so at about 3 1/2 and I thought that this was really outstanding. He now labels EVERYTHING that he gets his hands on!
My worry with pushing a child before they are ready is that is might cause them to loathe the experience and they do have a lot of writing years ahead of themselves...

I think you're right Cadmum, pushing in any form just puts them off. I'm encouraging dd's mirror writing whole-heartedly!

My DD showed no interest at all in writing or drawing until she started school3 weeks before her 5th birthday, but within a month she was writing her name and lots of other letters really well. I did try to encourage her earlier, but she always had more important playing to do.

Her loder sisterlearnt at 3 1/2 despite having a longer name.
