  • chop up vegetables reasonably easily (things like carrots, onions, turnips rather than 'soft' veg like tomatoes)
  • slice bread (straight & without mangling it)
  • drain a hot pan of pasta or similar safely?

DS1 is almost 9 and can cut most veg. DS2 is 7 and can do carrots, potatoes etc but struggles with onions.

I have never let them cut bread, but I think DS1 is probably ready to try. Ditto straining pasta, I don't let them do anything with boiling water but I think DS1 is probably old enough to learn to make a cup of tea so once he has mastered that we might move onto draining pasta/veg etc. Things to practice over the summer holidays perhaps!

DS1 has been washing up (including pans, knives etc) for about a year. Sometimes I have to re-do them though Grin

It does depend on the size and strength of the child as well as age, confidence and 'nous' when it comes to handling pans of boiling water and kettles, of course. My DD being the child of a shortarse mother is at 12 still not entirely comfortabe with the kettle and can only use the bottom (small) oven not the top one.

(I can cut bread beautifully, even freshly homemade loaves. Of course slices of that are supposed to be about an inch thick Grin)
