I know this is probably teething but....

DD is nearly 9 months old. She's been poorly for about4 weeks now it seems with the usual cold and/or cough that goes around this time of year. Last week she seemed to be rubbing her ears too and she's so unhappy, bless her. Yesterday, she went right off her food and would only eat yoghurt and banana at lunchtime (wouldn't even look at what was in the bowl so i cant say it was because she didn't like what I'd cooked) and a very small portion of cut up roast dinner at tea time.
Today she's had the following

about 3 ozs milk at 8am followed by perhaps 4 spoonfuls of weetabix

nothing at lunchtime (literally, just cried when i even showed her the bowl and spoon or finger food)

yoghurt after her lunchtime nap

some pureed apple and strawberry and a tiny piece of bagel for tea (again, just refused what I'd prepared her without even tasting it)

2 ozs milk just now before going to bed.

Could this all be related to teething? She doesn't have any teeth yet and I cant say that i can feel any coming through. I understand that colds are related to teething but what about the not wanting to eat or drink milk?

We were so lucky with DS. Just got him out of bed one morning and said "oh look, he's got 2 teeth!" so I'm really not au fait with what to expect.

TIA

my dd didnt get any teeth until nine monthes and she had a cold and didnt want to eat she also got nappy rash the first tooth really really hard work but more she gets the better she seems with it

peachandpear · 28/11/2005 19:19

Could be teeth. I am presuming there is no temperature. I know that DS1 used to go completely off food and milk and be miserable when a tooth was on its way and DD2 used to get a 'cold' everytime a tooth came. Have you tried giving her a dose of neurofen 30 mins before she is due food and see if that makes a difference. You can also get herbal teething powder. Never found it any good myself but some people swear by it. Teeth can rumble for ages before any appear. But seeing as she has been off colour for so long maybe a trip to GP!?! May have ear infection. I don't know. But at least you would know one way or another.
Hope that helps!

NannyL · 28/11/2005 20:01

most probably teething BUT if shes been touching her ears are you sure she hasnt got an ear infection.... (is her temp up?) cause if she does ears HURT.

Hope she feels better soon

mckenzie · 28/11/2005 20:15

No temperature at all so far. I've been giving teething granules and occasional Medised when her cold is particularly bad. Tonight I did give calpol 30 mins before her bedtime milk in the hope it might make her more settled and take more but that didn't work.
I'm definitely taking her to the doctors tomorrow (I planned on going friday morning after a bad day thursday but then she slept 14 hours thursday night and woke up happy as larry friday morning and so changed my mind. Big mistake I think.
Do you think she'll get through the night on such little food and milk today?

If not feed her I say. You can only cope with so much! Def doctors tomorrow. I would. For your behalf if not hers!!

CheekymonkeysGreatestHits · 28/11/2005 22:23

I'm just going through the same with DS who is 8.5 months.
He got his first tooth a fortnight ago and I think he is starting with the next one as the thick snotty nose and awful cough has started again
He's been off his food all weekend and has made a right mess of his ear by rubbing it. My doctor friend has checked and they are clear of infection.
Tonight he was really difficult to settle so gave a dose of Nurofen which he promptly projectile vomited all over his bedroom and has just settled hopefully for the night.
Why do these things happen when DH is away for the night

mckenzie · 29/11/2005 09:21

Hope you and DS both had a good night CheekymonkeysGreatesthits. I have a doctors appt this morning for DD so that we can just eliminate anything sinister.

Am sure it is to do with her cold/illness. My dd goes right off food whenever she is ill. Keep topping up with fluids and painkillers and she'll get through it.

NB I read somewhere ( can't remember where ) that the notion of babies teething ( and their related symptoms ) is really a western construct, and that there is no medical evidence that teething distresses them in any way? I seem to remember that it said in most non-western cultures parents don't attribute lack of sleep/appetite/red cheeks/dribbling etc to teething like we do, they just see it as part of normal baby development?

Just a thought anyway...

Mckenzie Did u go to drs? how did u get on?

CheekymonkeysGreatestHits · 29/11/2005 14:06

McKenzie
How did you get on at quacks??? Hope everything is ok.
We had good night, DS woke at 4am so I gave him a drink of water and a rub of Calgel,he went back off till 7 then drifted in and out till 8.30
Wouldn't entertain breakfast so I gave him a full bottle which he drank but then ate all of his lunch.
I can see the little peggie just under his gum so hopefully it will push through soon.

mckenzie · 29/11/2005 16:38

hi.
Interesting what you read Beejay. We'll probably never know for sure though will we.

Doctors gave DD the all clear re ears, throat and chest and as she was crying while he was trying to check her ears we could both see a tooth quite clearly at the bottom, must have come through finally during the night. She's been much happier today although still a bit out of sorts (her 'voice' sounds terribly croaky) and having extra sleeps. She ate about half her lunch which is really good.
I've done another favourite for tea so hopefully she'll eat some of that too.

Thanks for asking.

By the way, if one tooth causes this much hassle will they all be the same?

Hurrah and phew!! Ahhhh first tooth.

Well both DS1 and DD2 teethed badly with all teeth. DS3 hasn't been too bad (only got 2 so far though) so don't know what he will be like with others.

In answer to your question. I don't know but time will tell!

CheekymonkeysGreatestHits · 29/11/2005 19:23

Glad everything is ok! This is Max's 2nd tooth and he's been like this for them both, I really hope it gets easier for him

mckenzie · 29/11/2005 19:27

well it seems it's been quite a day for DD. Not only her first tooth but this evening she crawled 4 foot or so across the lounge carpet!

my dd's first four teeth were a bit of a shock for her i think - the cold symptoms, red cheeks, not being able to eat or sleep properly, the pain , then the fifth and sixth ones came and they didnt give her much trouble at all so hopefully the rest will be the same .

gRoOoOoOoVyChIcK · 30/11/2005 23:25

I used Anbesol with my dd. If she was in pain before dinner time i just rubbed a bit on her gum and it killed the pain for a while so i could feed her.

peachandpear · 01/12/2005 10:12

Ooooo. Someone else had recommended Anbesol to me. Is it any good? Is it stronger than Bonjela? Love you mn name by the way!

wavingordrowning · 01/12/2005 21:48

Anbesol liquid is fab but I only use it as a last resort (i.e the middle of the night!) and then the more homeopathic stuff during the day 'cos Anbesol is quite strong stuff. If you try it on your own gums, they go all tingly (adults can use it for ulcers) and am almost sure that the fun of the tingly feeling is what cheered my two up! BTW, the liquid is better than the gel as the gel just gets eaten whereas you can really get to the gums with the liquid. Good luck and hope your dd is feeling a bit chirpier.
