My son Ted, when he was about two kept waking in the night and grinding his teeth like a stressed-out Dingo. It REALLY upset me and bewildered me. He seemed so sunny by day. I still am not clear what it was about, though I think it may have been emotional rather than physical. I am happy to report, though that it has passed. We did nothing, it just stopped.

i have had 2 major toothgrinders and i think in our case it's just hereditary. (i still grind mine!) it's like bedwetting - lots of books say if there is no obvious physical cause then they are disturbed, which of course makes us all feel much better about it.
if they don't seem disturbed and it doesn't hurt them then despite the AWFUL noise you just have to live with it! (they won't break. promise. my elder daughter (now 19) ground her teeth down to the extent that when she lost her top baby teeth it made no difference to her speech but she has beautiful second teeth and doesn't grind them much!)

Urrrgh! My little boy (10 months) just started grinding his teeth this morning - he's got his two top middle teeth through now and the noise just went straight through me! Like sand between the toes... scraping a blackboard... yuk. Anyway - I'm going to try permanantly attaching a bikkiepeg to his wrist - they've helped him loads while he's been teething and maybe this will distract him.
(Bikkiepeg, for those not in the know: a little teething peg that is a very hard biscuit, with a small hole through one end to tie string through, so you can attach it to their wrist - then it's permanently within their reach)

SML, I've never heard of a connection between worms & teeth grinding can you enlighten me.

My ds grinds for England

My DD did grin her teeth terribly when she first got them. When we reacted she did it even more. Once we ignored it (cringing privately at the noise), she stopped. I guess it started out as a novelty for her, then as a way of getting attention and then got boring!!

My dd who is 7 months has just started this. I give her a dummy to stop it as I hate the noise and worry her teeth will pop out! She hasn't been doing it today so maybe it's worked.

I have always ground my teeth, although 99% of the time I'm not aware of it. It is apparentley really loud and it sends my husband mad during the night, but apart from that there are no problems associated with it. I'm not stressed its just a habbit and my teeth are perfectly fine. And I've never had worms either. It sounds worse than it is.

y ds used to grind his teeth, it drove me crazy! i tried to stop him by giving him a drink, tickling him to make him laugh, anything to keep his mouth busy! he started when he got his first molars and stopped a month or two after and nothing since.

My 5 year old son started grinding his teeth as soon as he got them. He started running his teeth across the top of his cot, he looked like he enjoyed it some how, I think he thought it was fun. He grinds his teeth really badly at night, it sounds so horrible. I wake him up sometimes. His teeth have been damaged from it but there is not a lot I can do about it. As soon as he starts loosing his teeth and getting his second set through I will go to the dentist to get a guard if it is needed. I am still hoping he will stop at some stage before then. He isn't stressed or anything, he looks quite peaceful when he does it. I do feel a bit better about it now that I have read that some adults still grind their teeth and their teeth are fine.
