Following on from thread about nightmare bedtimes, I wonder if I'm putting them to bed too early, maybe I'm in denial!

Have a dd 7 and ds 5 and we send them to their room at 7.30pm - is this too early?

my dd's are 2 &4 and go off to bed at 8pm for a story, thier asleep by 8.30pm, its been that time since they were babies, but it may get earlier when the oldest starts school in sept!! i think it depends on the child if the children are sleepy then earlier if not maybe a bit later!

lynniep · 10/06/2011 12:30

tbh I think it depends on the child. my DS1 (4) is knackered (and foul tempered next day) if he doesnt get the best part of 12 hours, so I try to get him to bed by no later than 7.30 (earlier if its not a preschool day). He will usually be up just after 7.
DS2 goes to bed before DS1 if its just me doing it, but at the same time if DH is there to put one of them to bed. He needs (does) less night-time sleep (usually rises about 6, often earlier), but also has a midday nap.

5yr old and 2 yr old have bath at 6:30 or 7pm. I get 2 yr old off to sleep first then 5 yr old is in bed by 7:30 or 8ish. The earlier it is the more likely I can hear him creeping around and talking to his toys.

I don't think it's too early for the 5 yr old. Perhaps half an hour later for your 7 yr old.

theDudesmummy · 10/06/2011 12:50

My DS is 2 and goes to bed around 8.30. This (often) allows him to stay asleep in the morning till about 7.30, which is desirable for us!

Flippingebay · 10/06/2011 12:53

My DD is 3, bath at 7 then bed at 7.30. Any later and she's horrid!

trailingspouse · 10/06/2011 13:00

How much sleep are they supposed to need then? I've never been clear on this. My dcs have to be up at 6am to leave for school at 7am so I make them go to bed by 7.30pm. They complain that their friends get to stay up later (they are 10 and 8) but I worry that less than 10 hours a night is not enough?

skybluepearl · 10/06/2011 13:02

2 year old goes at 6.30 and the 7 year old goes at 7pm - they need all the sleep they can get. they wake at 7am.

skybluepearl · 10/06/2011 13:05

you should be able to tell by their behaviour - whingy moany kids need a regular earlier bed time. if they are full of energy and positive then their present bed time is correct

trailingspouse · 10/06/2011 13:24

I think they would be grumpy with less sleep - they can take the odd late night but more than that and I notice definite emotional tendencies!

iklboo · 10/06/2011 13:29

DS is 5 & goes to bed 7:15-7:30 weekdays and maybe 8pm latest on a weekend. He's allowed to read for a little bit after stories, but he's usually fast asleep by 8:15! He wakes up around 7am.

FionaJT · 10/06/2011 14:08

DD is 6. Usually start getting ready for bed at 7pm (ie tidying up toys, bath, story), in bed by about 7.45 with a book and lights out at 8pm. I'm pretty flexible at weekends/holidays, especially when its warm & light & she's playing oustside, but she gets really overtired if she's not asleep by 9pm.

Hulababy · 10/06/2011 14:13

DD is 9y and in Y4, and is a night owl. Always has been, just like me. She goes to bed, on a school night, between 8:30-9pm. She is supossed to go straight to sleep but will often lay there for a good while, or might read for a bit. She would like to sleep in later in a morning but is up at 7:15am for school. But going to bed earlier doesn't make any dfference, she just lies awake for much longer.

Weekends are very flexible and depend on what we are doing and where we are.

Hulababy · 10/06/2011 14:14

DD ideally needs 10 hours sleep a night, rarely much more.

LadyMacnet · 10/06/2011 14:37

DS1 aged 11 goes up to his room anytime between 8.30pm and 9pm and reads for about 45mins, so he's usually asleep about 9.30pm. I expect when he starts secondary school in September I'll let him stay up until 9pm but still with lights out by 9.30pm. He has to get up at 7.15am.

On Friday and Saturday it's much more flexible but not normally later than 10pm unless it's a special occasion.

DS2 aged 2.4 bedtime varies depending on whether or not he's had a big afternoon nap or not but it's usually bath, stories and asleep by 7pm and I expect it will stay this way until he's about 5.

LawrieMarlow · 10/06/2011 14:50

DS is 7 and DD 5. Bedtime starts between 7 and 7:30. I have generally read to DD by 8 and DS by 8:30. Not sure exactly when they go to sleep tbh.

They sometimes need to be woken at about 7:30 - at weekends and holidays they tend to wake up later (which is nice)

nethunsreject · 10/06/2011 14:51

Both mine are larks.

Ds1 is almost 5 and is in bed by 7, asleep by 8ish.

Ds2 is 1 and the same.

telsa · 10/06/2011 15:46

DD, 5, 8.45 (up at 7.30)
DS, 3 - anytime between 9 and 11. (has to be woken at 7.30).

Lis1 · 15/06/2011 13:48

DS is 3 September coming and I like him to be asleep by between 7:30-8:00 latest during the week as he is an absolute nightmare to wake up on a morning at 7 (he goes to nursery at 8)

Although even on a weekend he is usually in bed by 8.00ish

verytellytubby · 15/06/2011 17:43

6 year olds 7.30
9 year old 8.30, lights off at 9. I think it's a bit late but DD never seems tired and enjoys the extra hour with me when her mental twin brothers are in bed!

TrinityIsAShreddingFatRhino · 15/06/2011 17:46

11 yr old 8pm
6 and 4 yr olds 7 pm

or earlier if I can trick them Grin

cjbartlett · 15/06/2011 17:47

4 and 7 year old - between 7pm and 8pm
