What age did your child start walking ?

My DD will be 14 months old on Wednesday and is still not walking yet. I'm not exactly worried as she seems to have no problems weight bearing but it is really getting me down that almost all of the other babies we know who were born around the same time are on their feet (not to mention those on MN ).

She was a late crawler, not starting until 10 months and now that she is so proficient at crawling she is reluctant to attempt to walk (she knows that she will get there much faster if she crawls). She takes steps if you hold one hand but only manages 2 or 3 before she loses her balance, she is fine if you hold both hands and will walk forever. She will also take steps using furniture and her little walker toys.

Deep down I know that she will probably be a late walker and I don't expect her to be toddling until about 18 months but I suppose I just want a bit of reassurance. If she is late crawling and walking will be behind developmentally for ever ? She was not a prem baby, born at 37+3 after a 3 hour non-intervention labour. She needed no oxygen or other medical support post birth. She has 2 half brothers (same father), one of whom was walking at 10 months and the other at 15 months.

my ds has hypermobility he is 22months and not walking yet..he is also not talking, has a squint and constipation all of which the consultant told me is often associated with HMS. I wondered if anyone else was familiar with these other side affects? He does have a wicked sense of humour though but I think this is just him!

zebra · 26/01/2004 20:04

What is HMS, Poplar (no, I hadn't hurt of it, before!).

bobsmum · 30/01/2004 22:55

I suppose this is as good a place as anywhere.

Ds finally walked for the first time yesterday afternoon and he was perfect!!!!!!

He's almost 17 months now. He let go of the coffee table in one corner of the room and just sauntered across to the TV like he'd been walking for months!! He's been walking everywhere today looking very pleased with himself and I'm so proud I have a toddler at last

nutcracker · 30/01/2004 23:27

Congrats Bobsmum, now you will have to run around after him
I think it's mad how we get so worried about things. My DD1 walked at 11 mths so i just expected DD2 to do the same and was beside myself with worry when she didn't. I think she was 15mths in the end, and Ds was 13mths.
Congrats to your DS too

ebra HMS stands for hypermobility syndrome (which is rather strange as they are definatly not hyper!) Its another term for loose ligaments or very flexible limbs with poor muscle tone which can affect mobilty..it can be inherited (I am double jointed in my legs and hands)See Eulalia 18 Oct..

Caroline5 · 01/02/2004 10:55

Interesting Poplar, my dd2 (2yrs 8ths) doesn't walk or talk, has a squint and is frequently constipated. She has poor muscle tone in her legs and her ankles are very flexible. I don't think hypermobility would be her only problem, but thanks for mentioning those other symptoms, I will speak to paed when we see her in Feb. What treatment does your ds have?

fio2 · 02/02/2004 08:27

poplar my dd has hypermobility too. She didnt walk until she was 23months but still has very lax and mobile joints. She also has hypotonia, global development delay and a squint. Doesnt suffer constipation though. Have you got piedro boots and heel cups for the hypermobility?

Caroline to get hms diagnosed you usually need to see an orthapeadic surgeon. Hope you are well btw

fio2 · 02/02/2004 08:28

constipation is related to low muscle tone though (hypotonia)

SoupDragon · 02/02/2004 09:22

14 months, both of them. Despite me and my brothers all walking before we were 1. I blame DH

It only takes a couple of mpnths before you can't tell the difference between early and late walkers though. The late ones seem to catch up really quickly.

lou33 · 02/02/2004 12:37

Squints are related to low muscle tone too.

Caroline5 · 03/02/2004 18:47

hi fio, we are all well thanks HOpe you are all OK when is the move??

noddy5 · 03/02/2004 18:50

My hv worried that my son was late walking although he was talking for england! We tried everything and on the day that she advised us to see a specialist my sister screamed from the bedroom that he had just got up and walked the whole length of the room in one go.He must have known. At this point he was 17 mths approx.Since then its hard to get him to sit down!Hes 9 now so dont worry

fio2 · 03/02/2004 19:01

hello caroline we are all well thanks, move 'should' be in about 3 weeks, i will send you my new email if you like?... I am hoping we are getting closer to a diagnosis with dd and i hope you are too

kiwisbird · 05/02/2004 21:18

My DD is 15 mths and cruising well, pushing everything around and even climbing, but she will not let go of that last hand!
I'm not worried, my 1st walked at 9 mths, wouldn't wish that on anyone!
DD may not walk yet, but she talks in 3 word sentences, so development is not a problem here!
It really stops mattering as soon asthey do it!

Poplar · 10/03/2004 12:18

Caroline5 and fio2 My DS has got his piedro boots and they do seem to be helping. We have also taken him to a cranial osteopath which has made him much more aware of his legs and arms! Apart from all this he is attending a 'school for parents' a charity which helps parents with children with difficulty in gross motor skills..so life is busy but it all seems to be paying off!!

fio2 · 10/03/2004 12:56

glad he is doing well poplar they do school for parents at my dd's sn nursery, wish I'd have known about it when she was younger!

Gilli · 15/03/2004 22:31

Hi Caroline5, Fio2Lou33 and everyone else - I'm so excited!!!! DD has just started walking (max 12 steps) after marathon second bout with osteopath. We have noticed a major change after each treatment, but physio seems to do nothing at all. She has just been measured for piedro boots and inserts, but she's just started anyway at almost 23 months1 I'm so happy, I can't stop telling everyone....

fio2 · 15/03/2004 22:37

Awwww Gilli that is wonderful ...you sound so happy too it has given me goosebumps!

lou33 · 15/03/2004 22:51

That's wonderful Gilli, thanks for telling us !

Suzy1953 · 24/06/2018 10:20
