Sitting up (and rolling over) - 6 month old - when to worry?

Okay, so this is what 6 month old DS does:

  • rolled over stomach to back dozen or so times around 2 months ago, but on very rare occasions since.
  • Only once back to stomach, a few wriggles on side
  • Loves tummy time now - can go 25-30 minutes before getting bored
  • Sits up and pulls to sit up/standing but doesn't really sit up unaided, unless very propped up
  • Last week he pulled his little legs up when on tiummy as if he wants to move forward

Should I be worried that he's not sitting up unaided yet? H

I don't think so, I know the average age for sitting up is 6months so there must be babies who do it a lot latter.

DS only just started siting unaided at 6months two week's latter and he's a pro now so things can change very fast.

Ds is being investigated for developmental delays, he was initially referred because he wasn't sitting at nearly 8 months. This was in combination with not rolling and being unable to lift head of floor from tummy.

It sounds as though you ds is doing really well, hopefully he should be sitting unaided soon!Smile

Hi, my son started sitting at 7 months but not unaided, kept falling to side or on his face, I didn't worry about it and at 10 months he only just sat unaided, then sitting from lying down, commando crawling, proper crawling, pulling up on furniture and cut first tooth all in space of 2 weeks! My daughter did everything by the book re sitting and crawling etc but my son could say more words at 10 months than she did at 12/13 months and already brings me toys and books that he wants me to play with and read to him. I wouldn't worry at all they all do things in their own time :)

DS is six months tomorrow and can only sit unaided for a minute or so. Doesn't roll over at all except accidentally!

matana · 23/05/2011 21:40

My 6 and a half months DS can't sit unaided and hasn't yet rolled from back to tummy but is getting closer i think - plenty of rolling onto his side. When i sit him up in a high chair or wherever he slouches to one side.

Okonomiyaki · 23/05/2011 23:40

My 6.5mo ds can't sit unaided yet (only needs a gentle hand though) and has only just started rolling from back to stomach in the last couple of days.

At 6 months DD was doing exactly what your DS is doing now. At nearly 7 months she could roll from back to front. Within a week she could sit unaided and crawl. They work and work, and suddenly get it and it's as if they've always done it. Your DS sounds absolutely fine to me.

LawrieMarlow · 23/05/2011 23:48

At 6 months DS could roll but not sit on his own. He did that at 7.5 months.

At 6 months DD could nearly sit on her own but didn't roll until 11.5 months.

Weirdly they both walked at 15 months.

piginmuck · 23/05/2011 23:52

ds nearly 6 months - rolling from tummy to back but not back again. Nowhere near sitting unaided yet. Not in the least concerned. Your ds sounds fine. Smile

Rubyabcd · 24/05/2011 20:23

I have a nearly twelve month old that still doesn't roll, yet she sat well at six months!! All different!! I know that at the eight month check they only need to sit for thirty seconds without falling for them not to be concerned!!

CharlotteBronteSaurus · 24/05/2011 20:30

dd2 is a week shy of 7mo, and can't sit up unaided, although she has been commando crawling for a few weeks. if your ds is making progress with his strength and control (holding head better, trying to move etc) then chances are he's fine.

Thanks all - very supportive and helpful responses for a mother to a PFB. Can't you tell Grin.

Is there anything I can do to encourage/help/motivate him (without driving him nuts) apart from tummy time and helping him sit up?

So glad i read all your replies. my son is six months next week and he's not flipping over either. Been really worried about it. He seems quite happy lying on his back. He seems to enjoy tummy time and will roll on his side but he just doesn't seem to have the strength yet to flip over.

pukkaplant · 25/05/2011 22:03

Is it all about strength? Is that why some do, some don't?

Think 6 months is too young to worry - my DD didn't sit unaided until 9 months, even if propped up with cushions before she would just collapse in a heap. Then one day I put her in a sitting position and she stayed and that was it!

Katy1368 · 25/05/2011 22:59

Think the reasons are largely genetic combined with a bit of laziness - if you put toys out of my DD's reach she just played with her hands!!

DD1 rolled a grand total of 3 times before she started to walk. DD2 is now 12 months and has rolled about 5 times, doesn't walk and doesn't even crawl yet. I'd love her to get moving for her sake as she really wants to be able to follow her sister around (there's only 14 months between them) but I'm not stressing about it yet - it will come. She was sitting at some point around 6 months but was regularly keeling over so I think she knocked out most of her brain cells at an early age by the number of times she went bang on the floor Blush

pukkaplant · 26/05/2011 09:01

Katy1368 - that's what my DS does. He loves his hands and fingers. And he doesn't have to move far for them!

Thanks all. Very helpful
