What books, toys or games do four year olds like to play with or read?

I am doing a survey about a 4 yr olds intellectual development. I would like to know whether they prefer toys, books or games (and which ones) and the topics (eg numbers) that they like that help with their intellectual development.

If you had specific Q's i could be more specific.
Toys: sometimes cars, trains, action heros
Books: He loves being read to EG tonight Dino DooDoo
Games: Board games, memory games, computer games Wii mario is huge favorite, snap, guessing games...I could go on.

thank you - some more specific questions could be :
What does he enjoy the most?
Does he understand colours and how many?
Does he under numbers and how many?
Can he tell the time?
that sort of thing would be really helpful

mine prefered books. could look at them for an hour and a half at a pop. items played with might include....

Toys: soft play,
Books: gruffello and other books by same author, anything with wild facts about nature
Games: word games, imaginative games

favourite is imagination games; dressing up, role play etc also knights, castles, pirates, soldiers (with playmobil or little figurines).
He loves being read to but this mostly tends to be a bedtime activity because he won´t sit still long enough at any other time. He is starting to enjoy longer books (e.g. captain pugwash) which he wouldn´t have had the attention for before also julia donaldson, has gone back to enjoying more babyish books with numbers and colours now he is doing them at school but with him "reading" to me.
also drawing, painting, plasticine, cooking etc. but these much less frequently than the above

he knows all basic colours, numbers to 10 in english, needs help to get to 20. can count to 20 in spanish (school language)
he can´t tell the time

skybluepearl · 19/05/2011 19:13

also ...

no interest in numbers at all - slightly lower than average maths ablilty. cannot tell time.
able to read very well at 4 - with reading age of a 6 year old. probably due to being book worm.
knows colours but little interest in creative projects.
enjoys physical stuff. well co-ordinated.

What does he enjoy the most? Playing on the computer. Running around. Having stories read to him rather than reading himself as he's just learning.

Does he understand colours and how many? yes, loads. Not puce or tawny brown but can explain greeny yellow etc

Does he under numbers and how many? Can count to 100 easily

Can he tell the time? Only on the hour and half past but this is very erratic and he still finds it really hard.

By the way he's almost 5. He couldn't do many of these things when just turned 4.

Oh, physical games like twister, dodge ball he loves.
Hope this has helped.

My DD likes:
Books - enjoys ones with pictures/flaps she can 'read' by herself, but will happily sit and enjoy longer and quite sophisticated stories being read to her without getting bored - like Just so and Roald Dahl type. She's also keen to re-read more babyish books, like Owl Babies and Each Peach Pear Plum.
Games: not really into board games or similar, has not yet been exposed to electronic games (so no Wii or DS) but will play matching games.
Role Play: Prob favourite kind of play of all, re-enacting stories, events, DVD storylines, stories from books - but not that into dressing up.
Toys: likes creative play, very keen on building environments - like farms/hospitals/schools with duplo/lego/any available props
Similar to above, she also likes things like dolls houses, farms toys and figures.
Loves toy figures (playmobil and similar) and soft toys - all actively used in role play games
Messy play: really enjoys painting/play doh/cutting/sticking/water. Can be trusted with sharp scissors.
Good with numbers, can add and subtract.
Can read a few words.
Knows all colours.
Can count to very high numbers.
Knows a smattering of French and Spanish.
No idea about time or the relative aspect of time - doesn't really get yesterday/tomorrow/last year/months ago at all but has a go.
Very articulate and easy to understand, good and appropriate use of language.
Better co-ordinated that she used to be but not that good on gross motor skills but v good on fine ones. Less skilled at things like using her scooter than many of her peers.
