What size shoes for a just-starting-to-walk year old?

Hi, I'm trying to buy a pair of crocs for my DS, for when he starts walking. He's only 5 months now, but we won't be anywhere near a shop to buy crocs when he is walking, so I won't be able to actually get him measured.

I guess he'll be around one year old, or so, when he stars...

What size crocs should I be looking at?

Many thanks

There are way too many variables to predict what size shoe your child will need when he walks, or even when that will be!

MarionCole · 18/05/2011 22:23

You can't guess. My DS's first pair of shoes was a 5, my friend's DS was a 2.

DD1 was a 7....she was almost 18 months old.

islandbaby · 18/05/2011 22:26

Oh dear. I hoped it would be a bit more like the way clothes fit a range of sizes (9-12 months etc).

Maybe someone could recommend a brand/style of shoe not so expensive as crocs that would be a good first shoe, and that maybe I could take a couple of different sizes?

Crocs come in double sizes so 4/5 or 6/7 and they are big and wide and dont fit all kids. Certainly not mine!
the baby range is called littles and cost an astonishing £17
But they are size 2/3 which is about right.
However, will it be summer when baby reaches this age!!!! Me thinks you'll actually be needing wellies.
Oh and get wellies on eBay! With postage £5
In shops £12 ish

Sirzy · 18/05/2011 22:27

There is no way you can guess. My Ds was a 3.5 when he started waking at 14 months. My nephew was a 5.5 when he started walking at 10 months.

islandbaby · 18/05/2011 22:27

(they need to be fairly plasticky/rubbery, as we'll be in very dry, dusty, sandy, dirty places... canvas would just be a mess in a week)

You really need to wait until he starts walking, then get him measured and take it from there.

islandbaby · 18/05/2011 22:28

sorry, should have explained a bit more. We'll be on a sub tropical island in the pacific ocean... it'll be summery, but often wet.

Interesting (now wondering where you will be....)

I ewould still wait and go with whatever the local children have.

islandbaby · 18/05/2011 22:30

Yes, thanks. However, the point is that I will be in a place where I can't get him measured at that time. What will be available will be hand-me-downs from other kids on the island, but I was hoping to take something less battered (as things invariably are, there).

For first shoes ideally they need to be properly measured.

Is there a reason you are wanting to get them now?

If you can get him measured you can download the fitting guides from the start right website then order online or get someone to order and send them to you.

KatyMac · 18/05/2011 22:31

Realistically babies are better without shoes unless it's very very cold; they are either in car or buggies or someone's arms until they are about 2 ish. Mainly as they can't really walk any distance at any speed.

Jas · 18/05/2011 22:32

x posting with you! Really not sure what to suggest in those circs!

islandbaby · 18/05/2011 22:32

Ah, that's not a bad idea, sirzy. I could have them sent over from england if I measured him myself. Good plan!

Why do you need to buy them now?

DS was a size 4 and 16 months. he very quickly went up a couple of sizes. has since slowed down thankfully!!

RainbowShite · 18/05/2011 22:32

Crocs would be damaging on newly working feet. You can put canvas in the washing machine, or he could wear wellies when its wet. If you measure his feet when he's ready surely someone will post you some shoes

MayDayChild · 18/05/2011 22:33

That beig the case crocs prob are a good ish bet.
How close to leaving uk can you get measured? If you know he's a Clarks G fitting for example you could buy on eBay super cheap lots of different sizes in a G.
That is what I would do!
Also the cheap shoes from high St shops come up so diff in size! Not two size 4 are the same iyswim

How about a pair of Robeez or similar...they will protect the soles of his feet more than being just bare footed. The sizes are more like clothing 0-6, 6-12, 12-18 months etc.

My DS was 7 months when he first walked, he was a size 2.5 then. AT a year he was a 3.5.

FunnysInTheGarden · 18/05/2011 22:36

don't see why wellies would be any better than crocs TBH. DS2 is 15 months and a size 5. That seems fairly universal ie size 4/5 so just go with that size in crocs. BTW DS1 wore crocs almost all summer when he was 3 and his feet are fine.

islandbaby · 18/05/2011 22:38

Great, thanks everyone. Will think a little more following all the suggestions.

Hello!
Ah ha! You are the poster going on the exciting trip! Well.... what would I do? I would get the leather soft shoes- clarks do them or other shops.

You can probably guess a bit what size your son will be- eg- my son who is very big for his age was in size 5s not long after starting walking (although he didn't walk until 16 mths), my daughter was in size 3.5- she is more average/slightly small for her age.

Do you have Mummy friends with some cast offs- could be useful for getting some different sizes. Although you want them to fit well, if you aren't going to be near a shop if you can get a few pairs of cast offs and take them with you then you should have something that fits Smile. I would probably go for size 4 ish if he is average.

shesparkles · 18/05/2011 22:52

When my dd was just starting to walk -before she needed "proper shoes" but needed something for toddling about the garden (it was summer) we got her some jelly shoes (don't think crocs were on the go then), what about these?
I'd be a bit worried about the tripping potential with crocs because they're so loose
