10 week old baby rolls eyes and flickers when unstimulated/lying down

Please help me. I am at my wit's end. My 10 week old baby girl has started rolling her eyes and flickering her eyelids rapidly. This happens every time she is flat on her back or unstimulated as I have just caught her doing it while looking around the room in her bounce chair. The paediatricians tell me they have never seen exact thing before. An EEG came back clear. I am desperate to understand what this is. When we call her name, click our fingers or pick her up, she comes right out of it. She isn't crying, or in pain and it doesn't seem to bother her in the slightest. If she's quiet and having her nappy changed or lying back she simply goes into it and the eyes and lids go bonkers. It lasts about 10 seconds or so but I usually call her way before then as it scares the hell out of me. Please, if anyone has any ideas or has seen this exact thing on a child of their own or friend's child: what was the diagnosis? I'm sorry to be so specific but if paediatricians can't tell me what's wrong I have to find out somehow :(
Thanks so much mumsnetters,

Google nystagmus Lorna - does that sound like it? I'm hoping I got the spelling right.

My children all used to do this as babies before they fell asleep. But obviously I can't see your baby so wouldn't want you to rely on that fact.

Thanks for this comment and we had pinned our hopes on it being tiredness but this happens when wide awake and only on her back unstimulated.

RE the nystagmus this sounds just like it but we wonder if it could occur so young. Just to add a week in hospital and no one has mentioned vertigo as an option, then a friend mentioned it tonight and then this new word and it feels like a good avenue to follow.

Thanks all,

If you guys think of anything else please comment.

Does anyone know of a Nystagmus specialist in babies - or even just a Nystagmus specialist in general? This totally sounds like what my little baby has. Thanks!

No experience myself, but have you looked at www.nystagmusnet.org/ ? There's a forum so you might be able to find some more advice.

Nystagus is a neurological term so you will not find a specialist in that alone. You need to be referred to a paediatric neurologist.

cfc · 19/05/2011 20:20

Yes your GP will refer, it is a specialised area so take in literature with you so he can have a look at it if he hasn't heard about it. Did not know there was a forum, you'll hopefully get some more info there.

Glad to have given you another road to look down.

@AGNKAR
Are you still on this forum? Please if yes, could you tell me what these eyes meant? My baby is doing the same. Thank you
