Weird things your DC's were scared of as babies?

Discovered at the weekend that my 7.5 month old DS is petrified of plants! We were sat in my mums living room, where she has a potted Lily on the hearth, DS was crawling about as normal and his arm brushed the leaves and he physically cringed! I have never seen him crawl so fast away from something! Thought it had just made him jump but he kept going back and touching it then cringing away! Weird!!! Kinda funny though..... [bad mummy laughing at poor baby emoticon!] Grin

DD was petrified by sand. That was inconvenient, we lived in Oman and made this discovery half way over the empty quarter.
She outgrew it thank goodness.

The cow looking over the fence in Rosie and Jim, theatre curtains and stages, windows open at night, walking in woods with the trees waving in the wind.

DS is scared of the Hoover and sticky/crumby hands, he once picked up some shortbread with a napkin when he was about 14mo
We do actually think he shows some tendencies towards OCD though
Goes crazy if toys aren't in a straight line etc

Some of these are hilarious

DS nearly 3 is scared of statues. Started about a year or more ago and he will hide behind me and quake if we pass one. Didn't realise until I tried to make a walk through Edinburgh more interesting by pointing them out.....Think it may derive from one of those "mime statues" that we saw at the Festival one year so he thinks all statues will come to life. There are a LOT of statues in Edinburgh.

DS1 used to be terrified of a little singing man in the teletubbies - there was a scene in ti where this little pink house appeared and a man at the window singing lalalala and DS1 would scream blue murder whenever it appeared.

shower - a neighbour actually knocked on our door once as he was making so much noise they were worried as to what was happening. All we were doing was washing his hair

hoover - MIL used to chase him with it and told him he'd get sucked up. We found this out after hearing him scream one day when she was vacumming and realsied why he'd hated it so much!

Shorts - he hated wearing thema dn would try and remove themHmm

My 2.5year old daughter is scared of:

Sheep
Goats
Baby chickens
Baby rabbits
Guinea Pigs
Cows, baby or otherwise

She is not scared of:

Whacking great big scaly lizardy things with spiky bits
Snakes
Spiders

We live in Australia. I don't think she's really got the hang of the whole 'survival instinct' thing.

DS1, aged about 1.5 to 2, was terrified of the moon. He wouldn't go out if it was in the sky, and would try desperately to make us all go inside if it came out while we were in the garden.

Unfortunately, he couldn't explain what he was afraid of, and by the time his language was up to the job, he had forgotten all about it.

pinkhebe · 18/05/2011 08:08

ds was scared of Bulgy the bus from Thomas.

I hate sand too - (wouldn't say I was scared of it though) so all your children with sand phobia are quite reasonable. Urgh hate the way it gets under your fingernails, I can feel it now.

Luckily, although we live by the sea, we live in Brighton Grin

Not my DC, but my niece. As a toddler she was terrified of men with beards. If we went visiting and DH was having a lazy weekend and hadn't shaved she would scream and run away. Wouldn't go near him at all! Was very weird and thankfully she has outgrown it now

bruffin · 18/05/2011 08:11

When she got a bid older about 6 or 7 it was anything to do with The Titanic and wars.

everybodysang · 18/05/2011 09:45

My 5 month old DD cries inconsolably if I hiccup.

Poledra · 18/05/2011 09:57

DD2 absolutely hated the Mucky Patches episode of ITNG, despite being a huge fan of the programme. It got to the point that she knew it was the Mucky Patches episode long before anyone else realised what it was. I still don't know why she hated it so much - Iggle Piggle gets mucky patches on himself, then gets some on Upsy Daisy, then Makka Pakka cleans them off.

She's 5 now, and we can leave this episode of ITNG on but she goes somewhere else to play because she still doesn't like it. Fortunately, 2-yo DD3 isn't a big fan of ITNG so we tend to just turn it off.

16 m.o. DS is also afraid of our fluffy duster on a stick. He thinks it's a dog (although he likes real dogs) Confused

Fantail · 18/05/2011 19:55

DD is just 11 weeks old, but in the last few weeks things other than hunger, tiredness and a dirty nappy have started to upset her, most amusing to me (I know bad Mummy) are:

Dyson hand driers (other makes are ok)
Roaring like a lion (other animal noises are ok)

AllDirections · 18/05/2011 20:07

DD2 was terrified of anything black from being about 6 months old until she was 4!!

Mine was scared of lilies too! And the noise of anyone coming down the stairs. And Ollie the bleeding owl.

Beentherelivedthat · 31/01/2024 22:43

The moon one has absolutely cracked me up
