Ds is 5 and is easily frustrated and gives up quickly. Dd is only 3 and seems to be a much more naturally tenacious child (will spend 15 mins trying to do her own shoes as opposed to ds's 2 mins and then chuck them approach). I'd like some ideas on ways to encourage him to keep trying.
At the moment I do the following:
you do one shoe and mummy will do the other (apply to any task)
rewards for achieving tricky things (he saves up bits of pasta in a pot and gets a prize when the pot is full)
general coaxing, praise etc

It seems to me that tenacity might be linked with self esteem - if you assume you will succeed you are more likely to try for longer than if you are expecting failure. What do you think?

How about praising and rewarding effort rather than achievement. So "I love the way you tried so hard with...". "wow, brilliant effort" etc etc, so your child feels good even if he doesn't succeed- of course you only praise effort if there has been some. In theory this may lead to him feeling more able to try to do things without so much frustration & worry about failure.
