Potty training advice please!

ds2 is 2.7 and is.....challenging Smile He is a lovely boy, affectionate and funny but VERY strong willed.

His brother (my ds1) was potty trained in a day at 2.10 and only ever had accidents when we forgot to get him to go to the loo before naps/journeys etc, despite him having significant developmental delay as a baby.

Ds2 has been the opposite...ahead in all his milestones, gross motor skills etc BUT would quite happily sit in a dirty nappy ALL DAY.

He doesnt tell us when he poos and, if we dont see him do it or smell it, he just sits in it...then he gets a sore bottom. (I do check him regularly btw)

He is supposed to start nursery for 2/3 mornings per week in September and I was thinking that I would try to potty train in the summer hols (after our holiday abroad) but I am getting increasingly worried that he just has NO interest at all in even sitting on the potty!

The potty has been upstairs in the bathroom for months now and he just uses it as a step! He did sit on it (its one of those chair ones with the removeable potty bit) a couple of days ago but tbh it seemed a bit small for him...he is quite a sturdy boy Smile

So, what sort of potty suits sturdy children - or should I just get some of those padded seat thingies you put on the loo seat???

sigh...it was so easy with ds1 (the only thing that ever was, frankly!!) and I really would like him to be potty trained by the time he starts nursery.......

Maybe a seat on the loo would be the best bet for you.

But on the other hand, maybe he's not quite ready for potty training.
2.7 is young for a boy and it doesn't sound like he's showing many of the usual signs for being ready.
I think it is possible to train children a bit earlier, but it is definitely harder work.
Maybe you should consider leaving it until the summer holidays?

I would leave it until the summer holidays and not worry too much. Every child is different, even though his older brother got the hang of it quickly. Just potty trained my ds shortly after he turned 3, he just was not interested at all before then. I can recommend a potty themed story book to help to get him thinking about it. We got a ladybird book called "Pirate Pete's potty". It's specifically aimed at boys and my ds loved reading it. Good luck. :)

My DS was the same, I was so worried about it like you, as DD was 2.4 when she was trained. It wasn't until the Oct school half term when he was 3.4 months when we just decided to take his pull ups away from him and took him to loo with us all the time, it just clicked with him within days, within 3 weeks he was dry day and night. Never used the potty (i did with dd) went straight to loo seat. Only a few minor accidents too Smile Good luck! I am so glad I left it longer with him as it was actually far easier than with dd in the end!
