My ds is 6. I need to get into a routine with my lad as he falling behind in his Maths and writing. Reading is going well as I've got myself into a lovely routine of him reading to me while I have a cuppa in bed before we have a shower and get ready for school and work. This has worked as it doesn't feel like a chore. I am very very lazy. Still sitting here in my dressing gown Blush Sorry to say DH has far to much school work to do of his own with marking, sports fixtures and staff timetable to get into a routine.
I am not very bright so I do confuse myself, let alone him so, I have avoided it a bit. So to help him would mean I probably helping myself too.
When is the best time for you to add a little maths in the day and stick to it. Don't say just get him to help with cooking as I do that already and he needs the basics drummed into him gently on a piece of paper. I work 3 days a week and get in at 6.30pm

For as long as he can remember, DH used to do "puzzles" at the table just before he was given his tea. Said puzzles were actually grids with numbers across the top (e.g. 1, 2, 3, etc) and down one side (also 1, 2, 3, etc), and he either had to add, subtract, or multiply them to fill in the grid. The numbers would be jumbled up every time so that he got really good at them.

could you do some table reminders or number bonds to 10 in the car?

I am a private tutor and primary school teacher. I would buy the maths for year whatever from WHS and tesco and the like. Only make sure to get ones for younger than his age group - you want him to get the basics and build his confidence. Also ask school if they are doing any courses for parents to help their children - if they arent they should be able to direct you to a school that is. Dont feel embarrassed about this at all, even parents who are great at maths will turn up - its the ideas they'll giove you that are important. They won't be testing your own skills at all.
If you can afford it, try to get a private tutor. It can work really well, as they love the individual attention, and in subjects like maths, improvements can be made really quite quickly.
Lots of songs etc in the car. Multiplication cds, 10 green bottles, 5 little speckled frogs. If they are too easy try saying 20 little spec frogs, then 15 etc going down in 5s.
Try a white board on the fridge at his level. 3 sums before breakfast. 2 doable with only a little thought, one a bit harder.
Good luck

number bonds are the sums that make 10, 20, 100 etc
for example
1+9
2+8 etc

memorising these can really help young mathematical minds and ensure the basics are deeply rooted

my son does maths-whizz on line. really helps and he enjoys it.

Starbear · 16/05/2011 10:26

skybluepearl He was doing www.mathletics from school but that was too competive for him. He has now found 'Cool Maths' from after school club which he enjoys. I'll give maths-whizz ago. I shouyld work on my timetables as well it would do me good. reading The Times today I have discovered that he will be who he will be and maybe interfering in that might not help.
P.S He did his Maths home work with his Dad yesterday. I'm pleased to report that DS was very happy that he did his homework without his Dad losing his temper they were both very happy and so was I. Smile
