is it possible to teach a 4yo boy how to pee standing up?

ds is just 4 and while he can pee standing up while aiming into the toilet bowl, if we are out and he's caught short, he gets into all sorts of bother. yesterday he was supposed to be weeing behind a bush and ended up peeing all over his shorts, pants AND shoes (just crocs fortunately!).

this is obv because shorts etc were around his ankles, but he doesn't seem to be able to understand how to point his willy out and direct the wee elsewhere.

no DH around to show him, any tips gratefully received please.

I said this over and over to him - Hold it up when you're standing up and press it down when your sitting down.

Its just a bit of target practice he needs and like when you were first potty training - praise him when he gets it right and dont make too much fuss if he gets it around the loo and on his clothes etc coz thats normal.

I've often held it for him when we're out (he's 3.6 now) and still do occassionally if the loo is high or if I see him getting flustered.

good luck.

Ds stands up at home because we have a little step for him to stand on.

When at a public toilet he sits down, as he isn't tall enough, and I don't want to be lifting public loo seats up ((((shudders))))

When caught short out and about it's tricky, it's just one of those things you learn, and more often than not dd gets a few dribbles on his pants, dh tells him to bend his knees which helps to point it out. I guess just trying to go to the toilet when you are passing rather than getting cuagh out ( easier said than done)

Someone told me to put a ping pong ball into the toilet, turn it into a game of hitting the ball with his pee.

I was going to suggest putting a ball in the toilet. Not a ping pong ball though as i learnt to my cost that they can get stuck in the U bend and clog the toilet Hmm I used a ball from a pack of play balls, like you would have in a ball pool, and drew a bulls eye on it with permanent marker.

It meant that my DSs paid more attention to where their stream was going and started to aim for themselves as they found it hysterical when they managed to hit the ball and it spun round :)

thanks for the suggestions, will try them all!

Yesterday's mini disaster had me shrieking "no! hold it out, not like that, point it outwards! no don't hold it there! it's going on your hands, let me help, oh now it's on my hands. and your shorts. and your shoes. and down your legs."

t was quite a long wee and I obviously didn't help matters. Getting home was interesting. Grin

When he's standing up put your hand in the small of his back and push slightly forwards so that he arches his back a bit, it helps to keep the willy at the right angle and helps the aim :o

There must be. DS was taught before he was 4, he did it behind a tree when we were at the park last summer. I was Shock Grin.

Apparently he had seen the bigger boys doing it at nursery and copied them (he doesn't see his Dad).

I've also heard about putting rice krispies in the loo for target practice.

moogalicious · 12/05/2011 20:40

Ds didn't wee standing up until recently (he's 6). If he was caught short while out, I would stand behind him and gently push his bum out so his willy stuck out iyswim. These days he just rests it on the top of his trousers! And tbh I was quite happy for him to sit down while at home as it meant less mess.

target practise.
At home - bits of toilet roll on the side of the bowl.
Out and about - that bush, that stone.
he might need reminding to hold his willy and aim, to give it a tug to make sure the hole is pointing where he is aiming. and another tug after to get the last drip off otherwise his trews will get wet when he pulls them up again.

my tiny 3.8yr old ds (only 93cm tall) has stood up weeing since he was 3..Shock - though that was normal? Must've been keen to copy Daddy!

Having 2 DD's this thread is an eye-opener for me Grin.

Good luck, hope things improve.
