How important is pointing and waving, really?!

Hi all, i wonder if you can help me.
On the basis of a baby/toddler not waving and pointing by 12 months, should one approach a health professional? All the milestones guidelines etc suggest that if babies are not doing these 2 things by 12 months, it is bad news.

My ds1 is nearly 12 months. He used to wave, quite readily and regularly at appropriate times, from about 8 to 10 months. Now he just does not bother, at all! He still does not point, I don't think, or at least not of his own volition. Sometimes if I ask 'where's mummy's nose' he will point to it with his finger and touch it and say 'there'. But he doesn't yet point out things of interest to me.

I am a bit worried as he is also quite fussy about who he will smile at, he is very temperamental about this! Especially a stranger tries to make him smile, he just won't. But then he will try to show off to other people? I.e. Show off that he can stand up etc.

He does do shared attention, like if something excites or interests him he will look at everyone else in the room smiling, to check that they are looking at the same thing etc. he copies words and sounds, will make kissing face and noise if you ask him to kiss etc. He has about 8 words that he uses appropriately, like banana, there, more, ball etc, and weirdly, hair! He seems to say mama sometimes. He puts his arms out to who he wants to hold him at a particular time.

But it's just this whole pointing and waving thing seems to be so important. Is there anything else of this ilk he should be doing by now? I am worrying, and thinking of mentioning it to the Doctor, but don't want to come across as silly. Any advice/views would be much appreciated, thanks in advance.

Forgottosay,he follows a point, and will clap his hands on demand. He can understand lots of what we say to him. It is just the damn waving and pointing, and the unreliable social smile!

What are you worried about? Autism? He sounds like a perfectly normal child to me.

8 words at not-quite 12 months is brilliant! My 16 month old has a few more than that now (but not many more) and people often say they are impressed at his 'language skills'. I don't remember him having any at 12 months but perhas he had 1 or 2. I know for a fact he wasn't able to point at nose/head etc at 12 months because we had a friend's kid round on his birthday and she was doing this and we tried him out and he looked at us like we were mad! He started doing this at about 14mo.

I wouldn't worry about it if I were you. Mention it to a HV if you're really worried, to put your mind at rest, but he sounds just fine to me. Perhaps he just got bored of waving - I've definitely found with mine that he seems to 'forget' skills for a bit from time to time, and then brings them back again later.

He sounds normal to me.I think the pointing and waving is a red flag fro some conditions such as autism. My dd has quite profound learning disabilities (not autism) and she did point but didn't wave until much later. She had other delays like lack of speech and gross motor delays too. From what you have posted your dc sounds very normal and I am sure it will come soonx

Pointing usually develops by around 18mths, so it's too early to worry about it.

I remember at DD's 12 month checkup the HV was concerned that DD was not pointing. It was not pointing when showing us something of interest ie look at that mummy, that mattered, not the point to your nose type pointing.
DD is 13 now and extremely socialble and an excellent communicator, her teachers say she energizes others, so absolutely nothing to worry about.
