Potty training

Hi,

To those with kids out of nappies, when did you start pottying training?

My DS has a potty and already sits on it on occasions. He has already done a wee in it too. So as the summer months are coming we're going to go nappyless and see what happens - no pressure.

Do you know of any good potty training books (maybe aimed at boys) that are really good? I was thinking of a cartoon type one that he could look at himself whilst on the potty, but also one that I could read to him, to explain why we are going to start potty training.

I have seen a few on Amazon but wasn't sure which one was best.

Thanks :)

Tbh I never used any books with my dc's. They had explanations and demonstrations ie they knew all the ins and outs from being with us.

All my dc were 2+ usually nearer 2 and a half when we had success.

How old is your DS?

I tried 'training' but it was hit and miss. I decided to wait and at 2.3 my dd decided she was ready put pants on one day and never wore a nappy again (except at night). I really believe it has to be their decision. They have to choose to do it.

Hi

Thanks for your replies. my DS has just turned 2. He got pants from his Granny for Christmas and he keeps asking to put them on. The last time he asked i took the potty and explained that if he wore pants he had to use the potty and he did for one wee (not sure if it was cos he needed or just luck) but not the next one. I have heard boys need to be a bit older/take longer than girls.

Oh well, we will see.

Thanks for your posts.

Hi there

My DD was 2.4yrs when I started potty training and she took to it pretty quick, but she had initiated it in the same way your son did asking to wear the knickers we'd bought.... I had a potty hanging around for a few weeks before this and I bought her a book called Princess Polly's Potty which I think is brilliant, they do one aimed at boys called Pirate Pete's Potty... I haven't read it but just found a review for it on Amazon and it sounds pretty similar it has a button on the front that cheers which you press during the story when the lead character uses the potty successfully etc

Here is the review of Pirate Pete's Potty:

I bought this book for my son in the hope that it would inspire him to want to use his potty. He is almost 3. Other books of this nature have frustrated me as they've often involved the child wearing the potty on their head, or they have somehow given bad/unhelpful ideas that do not help the parent at such a tricky and frustrating time. This book however, is great fun, has a really great message at the core and has definitely ignited my son's interest in the potty. The book also covers things like accidents in a really great way, as they are inevitable, and really encourages the child to not have a fear of the potty. I'd highly recommend this book.

I hope that helps :)

We started potty training with my son 2 weeks ago, he's a lot older than what most start at (2.8) but I was in no rush and was due to give birth when we would have maybe ordinarily have tried. Anyway, he got it literally within a couple of days, 2 weeks later he takes himself off to the toilet, can pull his pants up and down etc and never really had an interest in the potty, just wanted to use the toilet like mummy and daddy.
So after speaking to lots of my friends about this, most said that the later you wait the easier it can be, the earlier and the more accidents you're likely to get. DEFINITELY look for signs that they're ready, my son had started taking his nappy off himself a lot, and he stood at the toilet pretending to wee and then flushing the toilet, so he was definitely interested in toiletting!
Last thing, we bought Pirate Petes Potty and DS loves it, we started reading it a week or so before we started, and he understood it and what it all meant (although he does always call the poo in the potty a sausage Smile) he still reads it now and I do think it really really helped. So I would recommend it
Good luck,
K
