yellow teeth

My ds, who is 6, already has 6 big teeth. We have been really careful with brushing them with colgate total for 2 minutes twice a day and he uses kids mouthwash 2 times a day too. I have noticed that they look a bit yellow compared to his friends big teeth which worries me a bit. Does anyone know why this may be? He does eat a lot of fruit and is partial to a piece of cake and hot chocolate, but we try to do this at meal times so he doesn't really snack.

I've noticed recently that ds (8)'s big teeth are whiter now than when he was 7 and they had only recently come through.

I can't get him to use adult toothpaste though as he says it's too strong.

Maybe your ds's teeth will whiten in time, I'm absolutely positive my ds's big teeth have.

DS1 aged 10 has slightly yellow adult teeth so will stick around to see if anyone has any ideas why. Although my mother said mine were when I was young, they are white now and teeth that she thinks it is caused by a higher calcium intake and the teeth are stronger. She's not a dentist!

Apparently childrens adult teeth look yellow at first as they are next to White baby teeth making them appear darker

I'm sure I read somewhere that children's adult teeth calcify (or something?) as they get older and become whiter.

My DS's adult teeth do look much more yellow next to his baby teeth which are very white.

I've pondered this too so hopefully a dentist will come along

DS had really SpongeBob SquarePants teeth, ie great yellow rectangles with a space you could suck a straw through. Now 11yo they are white, even and straight and he's grown into them.BTW he's one who does't like minty strong toothpaste so I got him Sensodyne Pronamel which he tolerates (as well as a boy would, little soap swervers)Grin

thetideishigh · 11/05/2011 13:47

LordOfTheFlies Thanks - we did have some sensodyne stuff in a strange shaped plastic dispenser (can you tell I've tried almost all the adult toothpastes on the supermarket shelves and the other supermarket and yet another supermarket) and he was OK with it but I could never find it again.

I'll get some Pronamel tonight !

Thanks for all your replies. I feel more reassured now. We are going for a dental check up in a few weeks so i may mention it there.

My son's teeth started yellowing so we stopped his mouthwash (Listerine for kids) and this has made all the difference. Go figure.

fun12 · 19/05/2011 14:47

Very interesting. My ds uses listerine smart rinse. Kind of daren't stop usoing mouthwash though. Does anyone know just how beneficial it is?

my dh had very discoloured teeth when he used mouthwash after brushing his teeth.
his solution: use the mouthwash before brushing.

lovecheese · 19/05/2011 14:58

What nikki1978 said.

MoshiMonstersRUs · 19/05/2011 15:22

My dentist told me some mouthwashes discolour your teeth. He said that Corsodyl Daily is the worst.

One of my DC's is very fair with strawberry blonde hair and freckles - and her colouring seems to make her teeth look yellower. They are healthy teeth though.

starfishmummy · 19/05/2011 15:51

Some teeth are just yellower than others.

lovecheese · 19/05/2011 15:52

Corsodyl mouthwash does stain your teeth as it contains Chlorhexidine, but it is for adult's use, to treat gum disease.

presario · 19/05/2011 20:22

Dentist told me that some asthma treatment stains teeth as does mouthwash but reassured me the teeth were very healthy.

My 9yo son also has yellow looking teeth. They seem to get especially disgusting if he ever misses brushing them ( actually quite good as I can tell if he says he's cleaned them and and actually just been reading Beano instead!).

I asked dentist and she said it's to do with the state of hormones or enzymes or something in their mouth at that age and it will stabilise.

I also use my electric toothbrush (different head) on his teeth every now and again to give them a really thorough clean, but I want him to learn with a standard toothbrush so he doesn't have an electric brush everyday. Also Sensodyne Pronamel for children goes down well in our house as its not 'too minty'.

sarahtigh · 20/05/2011 17:01

dentist speaking !!!!! adult teeth are yellower than baby teeth its all due to relative thickness of enamel and dentine, the outer enamel is slightly opaque dentine underneath is much yellower, obviously yellow is sometimes plaque but mostly its just the natural colour and nothing to worry about, would never ever recommend tooth whiteneing for children,

corsodyl is only for adults not for long term use even then and it stains plque and teeth brown

colouring does alter the apparent coluring of teeth as does shade of lipstick a deep pink red makes look whiter orangey brown shades yellower
