My DS has been going to bed at 8pm for ages with generally no problems, and sleeps through till (we're so lucky) after 7am. In the last couple of weeks he's no longer settling at this time. We were at a relative's house a couple of weeks ago where we were going to stay, but we came home in th end as DS wasn't going off to sleep. That's not usual if we're away from home for the night though. But, since then, we've had problems almost every night.
His routine hasn't changed at all, apart from taking him to the park before tea as an attempt to wear him out! Last night for the first time ever, DH took him out in the car at 1am.... (it worked, though)

A tooth came through recently, so another could be on his way, but he doesn't seem in pain. we've given him calpol a couple of times but it hasn't made a difference.

He's not upset when he's up, he's hyper and very much ready to play!

Arrrggghhh..........

leave him in his bedroom to play/chat to himself for a bit before going to sleep? 8pm is late enough for an 18 month old. DS2 who is 15 months goes to bed at 6.30 and is generally asleep by 7.30pm. It does take a bit of chatting to himself and another bottle of milk though!

We've tried this, but it's not worked yet. Tonight he went down a bit later (8.30) and so far he's gone and stayed asleep. I really want his bedtime to stay 8pm at the lastest though. As you said funnys that's definitely late enough for a bub his age.

Could be the 18 month sleep regression to me - really, really common.

More info here and here and here.

Does his nap need shortening? My 16 m.o. DS wakes at 7, naps at 12 and if I let him sleep till 2pm, he won't be sleepy till 8pm or afterwards.
