Oh, Lord... Ds still thrashing around screaming in his cot

And he keeps climbing out of it. He is 2.6 but I have kept him in his cot purposely because when he was in a bed he would trash his bedroom for 3 hours before becoming hysterical....

Well, for some reason he is hysterical now. He doesn't seem ill, but have given him some baby neurofen anyway. He has been screamy and demanding all day, and have been giving him calpol. He keep shouting he wants to get up and draw!

He has never climbed out of his cot that I can recall, and always settles well.

I'm wondering if he is really ill (but is all bouncey when I go up to try and calm him), if he is over tired (bedtime is usually 9pm) or if terrible two's have finally kicked in!

Any opinions on how to deal with this would be welcome...

should have given him medised instead, don't think nurofen has a sleepy effect does it?

colditz · 06/11/2005 23:13

I gave him the neurofen in case he has a pain that he hasn't been able to tell me about that the calpol hasn't sorted.

his speech is delayed, so although we are now getting small sentences, they rarely make a lot of sense and when he is in this mood all he has said is NO.

He had a tantrum earlier because I 'killed' the bubbles in his bath with the shower head - I didn't mean to!

Could be any or all of the above, colditz I would just try and keep calm (easier said than done), go in, settle him down, then leave. Repeat ad nauseum. he will go to sleep eventually. Much, much sympathy - been there, done that and so on. If he's bouncy then I would say he probably isn't ill - but then again he could be coming down with something. I'm useless with this advice stuff aren't I?

Calpol usually knocks him flat, but today he seems determined to simply be downstairs.

Maybe he has realised that we don't go to bed at the same time as him!

what about grtting him up reading a few stories downstairs then settling him again afresh.

busybusybee · 06/11/2005 23:26

IMHO he is over tired - hence the bouncyness - I also have been there many times - I would leave him to get on with it - go in and reassure etc and eventually he will catch on -

Ds is 4 and kept us awake the other night from 2am until 4 am so you have my sympathies - at least you are not actually in bed yourselves - like we were...................

marthamoo · 06/11/2005 23:28

I really wouldn't bring him downstairs - you do not want to set a precedent, believe me Minimal attention, no stimulation - and be firm (kind, but firm). Oh I hope he goes off soon - it's awful when they do this.
