Is three months too young to be starting to teeth? Advice welcomed...

I have a three month old who has in the past week started drooling like its going out of fashion and wants to suck everything/put everything in her mouth. No apparent signs of discomfort or pain. Health visitor says that teething tends not to happen before six months but I can't think what else it could be. Could it be teething or is this jamming everything in your mouth a standard part of baby development?

My DS1 cut his first teeth at 14 weeks, and we'd had drool, crying etc etc for about 4 weeks before that.

Yes jamming everything in your mouth is part of the baby process but that doesn't mean that her gums aren'tr starting to irritate or itch. My DD was like this ages. The teething process was long drawn out and uncomfortable for her. Babies can be born with teeth so just because teething "tends" not to occur doesn't mean it isn't. Providing she is shown no pain or discomfort just keep an eye on it. (which I'm sure you willSmile)

thanks all... will keep an eye out. But again, HV says that its a myth that teething is a long drawn-out process, says in actual fact its usually over from start to finish within 5 days. Not sure how that sits with others experience....

DD dribbled like a leaky tap from about 3 months, first tooth came through at about 6 months. Usually took about 3 days per tooth, every couple of weeks from then, and we're now down to the canines (last 4 teeth) at nearly 14mo.

Some babies are born with teeth though, so there's no 'too early' to start :)

all 3 of my dcs had their first teeth through by 4 months, and the dribbling, red cheeks etc started way before.

As for your hv saying it's not a long drawn out process, ds seems to have been teething almost constantly for the last 6 months!

IME with some teeth it's been quick, with others drawn out. The HV is over simplifying.

When did you and your DD's father get your first teeth? I have read somewhere that there is quite a hereditary influence, so if either of you teethed early, she probably will too. My DS got his first tooth at 6 months (as did I) and his dad at 3 months. Definitely possible to be teething before 6 months!

My DC2 cut a tooth at 10 days... HV noted it down in the red book...

DD got all her teeth within days of each other when she was around 14 weeks old.
Losing them is a whole different thing though.

Boy started with the dribbling and red cheeks and irritation at around 3 months, I remember he went for his 3rd imms and was complaining then.

He cut the first two teeth just over 3 months later.

If I had a pound for every post on here that read almost identically to yours I would have enough money for a week away at centre parks.

It might be teeth but I would put money on them not appearing for months yet.

My dd was like this too at about 3m and i was convinced she was starting to teeth.

She got her first tooth at 10 months so god knows what was actually going on Grin

Drooling isn't really just linked to teething. It's actually associated with when they become co-ordinated enough to put things in their mouths - it's the body's way of flushing out the mouth so they don't swallow things they shouldn't (along with the gag reflex). That's why drooling starts at the same time. Teeth may not be along for ages!

I got three teeth at three months.. My DD had her first two at 4 months.. And she was definitely working on them for a fair few weeks beforehand.
