Enlarged testicle - wait or go see out of hour GP

I noticed earlier this week that one of his testicle was a little bit larger than the other, thought it was just his normal development. But tonight, after his bath, I checked it again and it's about three times the size of the other one. Should I call out of hour GP tomorrow - Royal Wedding day????? GP is closed tomorrow, Saturday, Sunday and Monday. I guess if I call early I'll be seen by out of hour GP at hospital... But what would you do??? He says it doesn't hurt, but is a tough little guy...

I would go to out of hours if it is that much bigger. Dh had this when he was 11 (im guessing your ds is younger than this but still) and i forget what it was called but it was quite serious and he needed an operation on it (he still proudly shows the scar - well only to me not in public...).
Not to say your ds has something seriously wrong but just in case.

Forget the out of hours GP. Get down to A&E.

Three times the size is very very wrong.

notapizzaeater · 28/04/2011 20:28

A & E

RosieAndGin · 28/04/2011 20:29

A&E now, my son had this, was a strangulated testicle, they said if we left it, it could have been fatal. Please don't wait.

thisisyesterday · 28/04/2011 20:30

i would definitely get it seen to sooner rather than later. if that means a&e then so be it

clayre · 28/04/2011 20:31

The op has another thread in health (I think) and has gone to out of hours gp!

Hassled · 28/04/2011 20:31

DS1 had a testicular hernia at 4, and then again at 5 - wasn't treated as urgent, but needed operations (quite minor). Testicles were the size of satsumas.

There is also testicular torsion, but he'd be in a shedload of pain if it was that.

Fernie3 · 28/04/2011 20:37

ah yes that was what dh had "testicular torsion" cant be that then. but glad the op is getting it seen :)

BeakerTheMuppetMuppet · 28/04/2011 20:42

go now, DS1 had a torsion, and almost lost his testicle due to it!

BlueberryPancake · 28/04/2011 20:48

OK quick update. We are getting ready to go to A&E but had another look at DS. He is fast asleep, so I took a torch and looked at his groin and the swelling has nearly gone. I can feel his little teste in the skin, and I definetely couldn't feel it when he got out of the bath. So I don't think that it's strangulated testicle, but we are taking him to hosp in anyway. I think it could be a hernia, as it has reduced as he is lying down. This is very strange. Will let you know later/tommorrow how we get on. Thanks for all your help!

Good luck!

DS has intermittant swollen testicle, starting 2 or 3 years ago. It gets quite large and a bit sensitive, but only niggling not truly painful or red. I didn't take him to A&E for it, did get him referred to specialists who scratched their heads, they hadn't a clue. I sporadically remind him when he needs to let me know, if it might be a true emergency.

throckenholt · 29/04/2011 09:07

how old is he ?

Have a look at hydrocele - one of my DS had that. It isn't painful and can resolve itself.

Testicular torsion however is I think painful and is a medical emergency. It can lead to loss of a testical. If it comes to that though it doesn't mean infertility as one is more than capable of making enough on its own.

BlueberryPancake · 29/04/2011 16:15

It's very probably hydrocele - we went to out of hour doctor and he was checked over very well. He needs to go back and see a urologist but it's not a serious emergency. He's OK thank goodness for that.

Thank you for posting this. Now I will know what to do if my ds is ever in a similar situation. Glad he is ok.
