car sickness?

My 20 m DS has twice now deliberately made himself sick in the car by sticking his fingers down his throat. This has been when he has been looking at a toy or a book so I am assuming it is normal carsickness. Does anyone know of effective measures to help prevent it (other than not letting him have distractions)? We do a LOT of long journeys as we have family all over the country so any suggestions would be appreciated. This is a new thing - he has always been great in the car up to now.

I have bought thesewhich have worked for my 5 year old. Other than that you can try the sea sickness tablets and putting him in the middle seat so that he can see the horizon.

Dont let him read. That was the cause of my car sickness which continues even now if Im reading (Obviously I dont drive whilst reading [cwink])

Your DS may be a bit young for this, but with my DS (3.5) who is terribly prone to car sickness we have recently tried 'spotting' things which works brilliantly. E.g. red cars - he yells out each time we pass one and we keep count. It keeps him looking out of the window rather than looking down at things inside the car (books/toys are terrible for car sickness - CDs are better, though annoying for adults!). Also stopping about every 90 minutes and getting out for fresh air. Slows journey down, but so does vomiting!

I would agree reading is a bad idea, also drawing or anything where their eyes are down. Tried many things including travel sickness tablets, which I think they can take from age 3. Best thing we found for long journeys is a DVD player on the back headrest as it keeps them looking forward. Expensive I know but plenty on eBay and worth it if it's a long term problem. Other than that have a Tupperware or old ice cream container and lid to hand for any emergencies where you can't pull over in time!
