My eleven month old baby

My baby girl is nearly eleven months, I am starting to worry slightly about her development. I have seen her roll over only a handful of times, she does not get from lying to sitting on her own, she does not crawl or pull herself up.

She does however sit very steadily and has done since she was 6 months, she reaches all around for toys. She waves, she says mamma and dadda, she has held her own bottle and sippy cup for about two months. She feeds her self finger food including small items like raisins and is very animated!! She will weight bear well and stand holding onto something for few minutes if I stand her there.

She has recently only started tolerating tummy time, and will lift her shoulders and arms high of the floor and turn 360 degrees on the floor.

Should I be worried

Not rolling is normal - some babies just don't. I met a mum of a 3 year old the other day who said she'd never seen him roll, but he was an early walker.

For my DS, the shoulder/arm lifting you describe was the prelude to getting up on all fours, then to crawling.

I wouldn't be worried. :)

Much appreciated

Sounds ok to me. You are going to have to bite the health visitor bullet if you are really worried. We get 8 month check around here (SE London) which is reassuring.
Do they do that where you are?

Rolling is not a requirement they need to master. We had DS's HV check the other week,he is also 11 months. I said he was not rolling/crawling and she said he looks perfectly healthy.

Strangely he started crawling the following week with no warning at all.

DD was crawling at 8 months and walking at 12 months but DS is just much more chilled out.

Easy for me to say as he is my 2nd baby so I'm a bit more relaxed with him.

She had her eight month check and as she was weight bearing and sitting they weren't worried. Hopefully its just be worrying too much

My DS only started crawling at 10 months. He mastered moving from lying to sitting only 2 days before he started crawling and it looked very much like that the two skills were definitely related. He started rolling from his back onto his stomach at 4 months but then did not seem to build on that. He spend most of his 7th, 8th and 9th month sitting on his playmat reaching for those toys closest to him.
I think all children develop at a different pace. Sounds like your DD is well developed. My DS is still not great at picking up small things, there is always something!
Oh yeah, I just remembered that my friend's DS always hated tummy time and learned crawling from the sitting position.

Both my DSs started walking at around 17-18 months. My eldest never really crawled as he learnt to bottom shuffle when he was 14 months old and he became rather adept at this. He disliked tummy time and didn't roll over until he was over 12 months old. My youngest disliked tummy time intensely, didn't roll over until he was 14 months old and started crawling when he was 15 months old. They both loved sitting and playing with toys and books within their reach and just didn't seem bothered about moving!

They are both bright and happy boys and the eldest one (now 6) is particularly sporty. Our health visitor checked their weight bearing at a normal development check-up around the age of 12 months or so and was quite happy with what she saw.

Babies are all different and develop their skills at different rates. One of my nephews walked at 11 months but his older brother didn't walk until he was 2. He was a huge baby (now 13 and the height of a 15/16 year old) and the health visitor said that he needed to develop sufficient strength to carry all his weight on his little legs so would probably walk a little later than other babies - she was right!

My DD rolled at 15 months, crawled at 16 months and walked at 19 - 20 months. She had little interest in moving until she was over 1, was quite happy to sit and play with her toys. At 4, she's running around and climbing with the others now. Her nursery was a little worried and got a SEN nurse to look at her, with my permission, and the SEN nurse, who was lovely, said she seemed fine and would walk when she wanted to. Like you said, it was the fact that she would bear weight on her legs that seemed to make the SEN nurse happy with her.
