Do you think it would be ok to swaddle DS2 to help him sleep, even thought its hot?

DS2 is a month old today. I posted on a separate thread earlier about him taking hours to settle back to sleep at night. He is asleep in the moses basket when I put him in, but he doesn't stay asleep.

He likes to be held close/snuggled so I was thinking of swaddling him in one layer of a moses basket sized cellular blanket - would this be too much of a SIDS risk though?

Temp in room these nights average 22/23 and we have the window and door ajar. DS2 wears a short sleeved vest and a baby gro

I used to swaddle DS in a massive muslin square (about 4 times the size of a normal one, from toys r us) when it was hot. When it was really hot he was just in a nappy and muslin swaddle.

I'd only swaddle in cotton though, then put a cellular blanket over. I think being swaddled in a cellular blanket would be too hot.

I would lose one layer of clothing and then swaddle - perhaps in a sheet instead of a blanket??

RhinestoneCowgirl · 25/04/2011 19:53

Congrats on the baby Puss :) (hoping you remember me Blush)

I would swaddle with sheet, maybe just in a vest?

SilveryMoon · 25/04/2011 19:54

I agree that it may be a bit too hot.
When ds1 was small and we had the same problem, I used to make a little 'nest' in his basket with a cot sized sheet.
Roll it up like a sausage and then put it in the basket in like an oval shape so ds is laying inside it with head on the top rim and legs over the bottom one. I found this gave mine the sense he was still being held and he wasn't too hot.

I know that probably doesn't make much sense, but hoping yswim

FunnyBumbleBee · 25/04/2011 19:54

Yes, I always used just a cotton sheet and a vest. Definitely swaddle though!

PussinJimmyChoos · 25/04/2011 20:06

Rhine course I remember you Smile We need to do a meet up -its been ages! How are your DS and DD?

I'm liking the cot sheet rolled up idea as atm, he is asleep on a V shaped pillow (falls asleep on there after a feed) and he likes that being surrounded sensation

However, the rolled up sheet not a risk in terms of if he rolls, he could squash his nose and not breathe? I know he's too young to roll yet but you can't take any chances with sudden developmental milestones!

Would love to do a meet-up :) DS is at school now and I'm loving being at home with DD, toddlers are blast

As you were ladies...

i used this on DD last summer. It worked brilliantly. It is quite light. When it was really hot i had her in just a vest under it.

it is made of light jersey cotton so breathes nicely.

sorry, screwed up the link

I wouldn't use a cellular blanket, but a flat cot sheet would do.
After much trial and error I ended up using the swaddle designs blankets for my two. They do a lightweight one for summer, and are the only ones (of the "swaddling" or "receiving" blankets) big enough to last more than the first few months IMO.

I'd take off the babygro if you are going to swaddle. He'll be fine in just a vest, or even just a nappy when summer proper kicks in.

Thanks for all replies...have ordered the summer design one from Amazon as am desperate and want it asap - - even forked out for next day delivery!

I'm sure its a swaddling issue...DH swaddled him this am - I don't mind doing it first thing in am when room is nice and cool and he slept from 7.30am to 11am!! Maybe he's still got his days and nights mixed up .....he was up from 2am to 5.30am today...in the end i had to hand over to DH and I felt awful about it as DH has work but I could barely keep my eyes open!
