A long one, sorry!
DS2 was recently dicharged from hospital after being on a nasal-gastric drip for four days (gastroenteritis). (His older brother, 4 yrs, was in for 2 days but no drip).
He came home 4 days ago and seems to have recovered well physically, His appetite has returned to what was normal for him.
The problem is he is waking up every morning between 2 and 4, screaming and crying, headbutting and kicking. Because he was still quite poorly when he first came home, on the first night this happened we took him into our bed because we wanted to keep our eye on him. He had a drink of squash and this settled him enough to go back to sleep.
Every night since he has done the same so, thinking he was still quite depleted of energy we gave him a banana (which he had asked for). After throwing it several times, he eventually ate it and went back to sleep ....for about 20 minutes when he was off again. He was kicking and headbutting me and DH. There was no consoling him at all and we ended up letting him scream in his cot until he eventually went back to sleep.
When DS got up (screaming) at 6.30 this am, DH gave him his breakfast which he threw on the floor shouting "Mummy, mummy". As soon as I appeared he picked up his breakfast and bagan eating.
My thinking is
- Could this be that he just got used to me being in a bed next to his in hospital and had my undivided attention? (DH was at home with DS1 and visited every day until DS1 was hospitalised too.)
- Is he really getting hungry and do we just keep feeding him what he wants in the middle of the night until he's ready to sleep?
By the way, before his illness I was gradually taking him off the breast (I'm 18 wks pg with third DC.) and with him being 'attached' to the cot by the drip it was difficult to carry on BFing so he has not fed since before being poorly. He has never mentioned it or asked for it, so I don't think he's missing it at all emotionally.
Poor DS1 is also being woken in the night by him and we're generally all bloody miserable. We're supposed to be going on holiday in a static to the Netherlands next week but to be honest, I'm dreading it and would rather not go ATM.
Any thoughts, please. I'd be really grateful.
