Leaky nightime nappy - any tips?

Hello,
Over the last couple of months 18mo DS has been waking up a lot with a sodden nappy which has leaked through to his PJs & sleeping bag etc. it's normally about 5ish he wakes but last night it was 12.45am & I ended up having to change him which of course meant it was then party time for him. We've always used Pampers Baby Dry with no probs (did dabble with Huggies early on) but they are just not doing the job now & tried moving him up a size with no luck. Has anyone got any suggestions - I've heard Tescos own nappies sometimes do the job & also tales of a cotton wool ball on the willy (can someone explain that - I have a hard enough job getting a nappy on him let alone something that precise!)He sleeps a lot on his front so I think that's the problem - he's certainly not drinking any more than usual & has his bottle just before bed which he loves so I'm really reluctant to drop that (plus I don't know how I'd ever settle him down without it). Any tips appreciated - thanks x

Have you tried doing up the nappy either tighter or looser? I'm guessing you're using the regular nappy rather than a pull up? Pull ups always leaked for us. Could you move up another size without it being ridiculous? Nappies have worked best for us at night especially when they are only just on the lower weight or even not quite there.

We always used Pampers and didn't have any probs following the above, but our kids sleep on their backs- hmmm Pampers Active Fit, slightly different? And no, I wouldn't drop the bottle, my kids still have milk at bedtime and are a lot older (and still in their pampers nappies!).

had this with dd1 (disposables), never a prob with dd2 (reusables). Invest in 3-4 night nappies reusable ones.

Mummyrev · 20/04/2011 10:31

Tesco own brand, the purple packet, think it is their version of active fit are better IMHO than anything else. Also second the suggestion of going up a size. Or change him on your way to bed. It is possible without waking them fully. Good luck.

I used to buy an insert for the nappy - they where like a large sanatry towel and they would absorb the extra night time wee. I have been told on here that they no longer produce these, but wonder if you could find a similar product in the tenalady range - they do do pads of similar ilke in the incontenece range

My DS 14mo never got on with Baby Dry at night, he does massive wees and they always got sodden and then exploded (really disgusting with wee-filled crystals escaping everywhere bleuch). I switched to Huggies which seem to hold much more wee and never leak.

That said, the best nappy for each baby seems to depend a bit on their bodyshape, DS is long and muscular with not chubby thighs and a long body, a friend with a shorter chubbier baby who also did massive wees found Lidl own brand to be great but they leaked terribly on DS

HTH

BabyDry in my experience (two boys) often failed, but ActiveFit were pretty good, then Huggies Pullups Nites never let us down. Both my boys at the same age as yours would apparently save it up for one big wee so whatever they were wearing had a lot to cope with!

Good luck

messytimemum · 20/04/2011 12:01

The best nappy we found was Tesco's Baby essentials (the green packet), as they were made large and absorbed just about everything thrown at them. Libero and Fixies nappies are also quite good (especially when they get older) although they are quite expensive. Have heard good things about Lidl nappies although haven't tried them.

MamaChoo · 20/04/2011 18:10

Yes, Tescos own brand solved this problem for us!

muslimah28 · 21/04/2011 21:31

we use one size up at night, this worked.

Chunkamatic · 21/04/2011 21:34

I had this problem with DS2 whilst he was still BFing at night and just used to put 2 nappies on at night! He didn't seem to complain but then he was smaller than your DC.

Noop · 21/04/2011 23:18

My ds2 does enormous wees and we have to change him sometimes twice in the night. He is now quite good at sleeping through this thou, and we are quite good at waking up and checking him before going back to sleep. He does huge wees during the day, too and I'm wondering if he is drinking far too much. Does anyone know how much a 2.5 y/o ought to be drinking? And does it matter if they drink way more than that? It is watered down juice or squash during the day (he won't touch milk) and water at night.

Our son used to have a bottle or cup of milk as part of his bedtime routine it was the absolute last thing before lifting him into the cot. And he went to bed at 7 every evening and all of a sudden when he was about 16mths he always woke wet either at night or upset in the morning, before his usual natural rise time of 7a.m.

As we stopped using the bottle (terrified us to do but he didn't even blink at the change) we introduced giving the cup of milk to him earlier, after his dinner and before his bath and kept absolutely everything else the same about his night time routine. He rarely ever wakes wet now and he didn't mind that we've changed things slightly. He doesn't fall that lovely drowsy asleep like he used to on the bottle but he goes to bed happy. And it's less wet washing for me!
We did try more sizes of nappies, wondered if the Pampers were not the right shape for him anymore and tried different brands etc. but nothing was 100% or close to it.

We used 2 nappies for a while which worked a treat- nothing got through that though one nappy would leak every night. DD had a bottle of water in her cot and she was drinking gallons. After a while I worked out this was just a comfort rather than a thirst thing and I changed it to a non-spill beaker. She didn't like it at all, but stopped drinking so much, and then no leaking nappy.

plipplops · 22/04/2011 14:46

I used to use 2 nappies (had slightly larger ones for DD1 anyway so put one of those on top). I use Tesco own brand now and they're great...

Another vote for tesco here.

Atomant · 23/04/2011 02:43

And another vote for tescos. We had the same issues with pampers & similarly stopped using them when DD was about 19mo for the same reasons. Wish I'd used tescos since birth they're great & sooo much cheaper than pampers!

PinkToeNails · 26/04/2011 17:18

I've just started having the same problem with my DD who is 17 months and wearing Pampers Baby Dry. She has suddenly started ding huge wees during the night so I moved up a size, but it hasn't helped. The 4+ are too small and the 5s are too big so I'm thinking of trying Huggies for the night. I did use some Tesco nappies, but the wee seemed to seep right through the nappy.

PinkToeNails · 26/04/2011 17:19

doing not ding
