Is DD 7 to young to watch Nickelodeon and Disney?

I've been having a bit of a battle with my DD aged over TV. I don't like a lot of the shows on Nickelodeon and Disney mainly the American teen, high school, geek v popular girl type shows. I understand that she has grown out of Peppa, Dora etc. and don't mind her watching CBBC as at least there are some better quality shows on there - although can't stand Tracy Beaker but that's another post! I should also add that DD2 is 4 and often end up watching the same tv as her sister if they are in the same room.

Just wondered what tv your DCs watch before I set the parental controls on these channels!

mmm difficult one. My nearly 6 year old boy will still watch cbeebies but also likes play house disney and Nick Junior. All fairly tolerable with toddler too.
You have a girl tho and I bet some peer pressure there! Think you may have to give in on some of it!!

thebird · 20/04/2011 08:56

Yes there is some peer pressure I often get 'all of my friends are allowed to watch xyz'. Of course this is not true. TV hasn't really been an issue until this holidays when she has been coming downstairs in the morning to watch this stuff. What bothers me is the change in how she speaks 'like whatever' 'I mean seriously mom' together with a bit of teen attitude. I don't need that at 7!

I do know what you mean. My sister in law a few years back was not happy with her 5 and 6 year olds obsession with High School musical. I found a year or so back that I disapproved of Ben Ten. One friend of mine thought I was being precious. Fortunately after going on and on about wanting to watch Ben Ten my then 4 year old said he found it scary and has never asked to watch it again.

I do think some of the 'princess' type stuff is a bit nauseous and think I would be uncomfortable about it if I had a girl. Also I hate some of the girley adverts.

You may find that if you let her watch, she may decide she doesn't even like the crappy shows! My dds went through a stage of thinking they liked High School Musical because everyone else did....after a while they realised they didn't!

Dont mind HSM so much as it's a film/dvd you can switch off and its more singing and dancing than anything else. Its the icarly, Hannah Montana etc. that are on 24/7 that I dont like. It's all just we're so pretty and cool and popular and there is usually someone who is geeky and on the receiving end of lots of jokes.

TBH DD has not been a big TV watcher until she came across these shows, so its also the increased watching that worries me. Anyhow I've had enough of her trying to be a teen at age 7 just blocked these channels. Probably get lots of 'thats just like so unfair MOM' tomorrow :(

Hi Bird, I was relieved to see your post. DS at 7 is watching Disney and Nickolodeon and I too dont like what I am seeing. Yes, yes,yes to what you say about vile American stereotypes - cool, anorexic girls vs the losers; unfunny repartee, grating US sayings ("whatEVEEEER"); violence dressed up as special effects. I dont want this to be shaping my beautiful DS's mind. But we dont live in the UK so he only has access to DSTV and he is bored with CBeebies, though he still likes Big Cook, Little Cook. I dont know what else to point him to. HE doesnt watch much TV anyway, but he does love it and I am reluctant to ban tv altogether.

I have similar issues with my 2 girls aged 6 and 3. The 6 year old has outgrown the things the 3 year old likes. The 2 programmes that they both enjoy together are Deadly 60 (about animals) and The Worst Witch. I record them both and then we can play them whenever we want.

rainbowinthesky · 23/04/2011 09:31

We have sky and all these channels. DD loved watching these shows on disney and nick and is 7 years old. Tbh dh and I (and even ds 15) thought they were really unsuitable for her. We solved it by putting a pin on all the channels which had these american teenager type programmes.
Dd now mainly watches sponge bob and cbbc.
We are going one step further now and getting rid of sky altogether - due to finish in a couple of days.

southernbelle77 · 23/04/2011 16:33

My DD (almost 7) is currently loving Phineas and Ferb on DisneyXD! We record it and she watches one a day. To start with I wasn't sure, but I cNt stand all the younger cartoons on cbeebiesandNick Jr. Thankfully she isn't really into icarly and Hannah Montana!

Blocked the horrid channels and glad to report that we are now free of horrible american teen shows! DD has been too busy outdoors in the holidays to be bothered. She now watches CBBC instead and also loves Deadly 60 and Wipeout.

Funny, I have also noticed a marked improvement in her attitude too. My little girl has stopped being a horrid teen calling me MOM and is now lovely 7 again. Don't hesitate ladies get rid of this stuff - its poison!

DD's attitude changed completely too once these channels were blocked.

Chundle · 05/05/2011 11:48

We binned sky as it was such a battle with our dd who is 7 I missed sky for a few weeks and not bothered now!
