What interests does your two - three years old have?

I was reading about how to discover what your toddlers interests are. Childminders in nurseries for example can use different models of observation to determinate what these are so that they can encourage children to live up to their potential.
If your nursery doesn?t have a child portfolio based on which they should justify taking a fortune for your child?s care and claiming they are top of the class.
Joke a side.
How can you master that if you are stay at home mum?
Would say that your child has a particular interest that he/she pursues? One important enough to play a important role in future?
Is that even possible at such young age?

I can?t find any in my daughter LOL except that she loves to do puzzles. Not sure if that?s any good for future success.

Seriously what your 2-3 years old rascals like to do?

I wouldn't worry too much about spotting interests that has a future potential for success really? all their interests have some benefit to them surely, whether puzzles or whatever else

my 2 yr olds favourite interest at the moment is Thomas, and trains generally, also very keen on puzzles, painting, glueing and sticking, going to the park, cars etc

Teddies and dolls. Now the teddies have teddies if you see what I mean! It's getting a bit involved. The teddies play games and she is one or other of the teddies often- I'm not allowed to call her by her name but the teddies. They get put to bed and given food and hugged and kissed a lot!! It's rather a love in in this house at the moment Grin.
Then hide and seek is a favourite, puzzles, songs, role play on the basic level- she starts to look a bit confused when trying to join in older bruv's games- he's in the 4 year old imaginary stuff big time phase.

"Would say that your child has a particular interest that he/she pursues? One important enough to play a important role in future?"

Hmmm, wouldn't say that exactly. Dd had a crush on Thomas the Tank Engine at 2; at 14 is totally uninterested in any form of transport and only wants to read books and go on the stage.

Ds was completely mad about birds: at 10, he hates anything to do with wildlife and won't go near an RSPB reserve. I feel conned Hmm

mumcanIaskaquestion · 20/04/2011 17:45

Well my 2 yr (ds) and 3.6yr (dd2) like argueing with each other best Grin.

But realy anything can be cars/trains or on the just as likly be puzzles and dolls.

BertieBotts · 20/04/2011 17:53

I think it's sad that they monitor their interests to help them achieve their full potential Confused I'm pretty sure I had different interests to now, when I was 3.

But anyway. DS, 2.6, particularly likes
Trains - thomas especially, but any trains
Numbers/letters, though he can't read or anything, he's not that good!
Animals of any kind. currently obsessed with spotting the tiniest ant which I can barely see.
Being outside, jumping, climbing, running, rolling around giggling with other 2yos in an adorably innocent way.

Dd2 (3) loves dressing up as a princess, listening to princess songs, watching princess dvd's, she loves ballet and is good at gymnastics, she is very athletic and has good balance so loves things like balance beams at parks, she enjoys her scooter, balance bike and pedal bike, she runs around with her older sister's friends, she sings and role plays with her dolls....

BertieBotts · 20/04/2011 18:02

Thanks for posting that, AuntieBulgaria - that's really interesting and makes more sense now :)

My daughter is 3.2 she plays micromachines, brio style train set (got from ikea its cheaper!), lots of outdoorsy stuff like footie, park etc, baby dolls, micro machines, role play cooking/play house, looking at books.

She has all mine and my husbands toys from when we were younger such as mcdonalds toys, lego and micromachines so she has loads to play with. Also she is obsessed with youtube videos of rhymes and songs and it drives me mad!

Bertie, my 2.7yo DS sounds much like yours - he is incredibly physical atm, his favourite things are running around, chasing/being chased, climbing and jumping off, playing football, chasing pigeons (controversial!)

Other major interests are: anything vehicular; gardening/growing things; books; drawing. Whether any of this will turn out to be an abiding interest or a career, who knows? I am a total bookworm and DH has been drawing all his life, but neither of us has forged a career out of it. More's the pity.

I do think DS is naturally quite athletic though and am going to try to encourage this, just because I think it's important not to grow up to be a lazy arse like me and DH to enjoy physical exercise and fitness in life.

onEastarEggIGraze · 20/04/2011 18:15

noodle - my DS makes me watch Youtube clips of fire engines over and over again. Fire engines leaving the station, fire engines on parade, fire engines going down the street with their sirens on. It's sweet, but not exactly stimulating after the first five minutes Grin

lljkk · 20/04/2011 18:22

ROFL @ Beehiving.
"Future success"?? We need to guarantee this by knowing their interests so that they can "live up to their potential" Confused Confused
I'm sorry, but did you say you were talking about two year olds?

noodle69 · 20/04/2011 18:32

lol easteregg. With my DD its the annoying songs and then I cant get them out my head ever, even when trying to get to sleep!

BertieBotts · 20/04/2011 18:42

Oh yes, chasing pigeons. And squirrels. The squirrels in our local park are obligingly tame. I have a wonderful video of him roaring and chasing one, only for it to find safety behind a park bench, turn round and dare to look at him, at which point he screamed and ran away in fear Grin
