10 mo ds has never been a great feeder and I've posted on here several times, but it seems to be spiralling downhill. He just loves his bottles more than anything and savoury main meals and breakfast are getting harder and harder to get into him. He is a little better with puddings altho still not great. Should I go back to making everything smoother? He also wont really touch any finger food and I just dont know how to encourage him to try things - even off my plate its not great!

His weight is absolutely fine - no concerns there at all. I suppose I'm just looking for reassurance not to worry - I keep telling myself he's only 10 mo. I'm concerned he may not be getting all the nutrients he should, and also that he may turn into a terrible picky eater. Please help!!! Am I worrying too much!!

How much milk is he having?

buffy13 · 17/04/2011 21:08

Hi my son is 10 months also and I have opposite problem, he won't take bottles at all anymore have to give them when he's asleep :-)
Do you give him milk at separate times to his solid feeds and give water/juice with the solids?
I would not go back to purees, stick with lumpy food my son is still on 7 month jars at moment. Don't worry about finger foods my son isn't interested in them yet and my daughter wasn't either till she was about 12 months. Still offer them but if he's like my lazy baby he'll just want to play with them and squidge them in his fingers :-) If he's gaining weight and happy I wouldn't worry too much at the moment x

i think at that age you need to stay calm and not make a fuss. He is way more likely to become a fussy eater if meal times become an issue and he can sense your anxiety or anger.
Try making things smoother and see if it works, it may be that you've moved him on too fast.
Also do you home cook or use jars - a lot of babies who normally eat home cooked food will eat better from jars - i think they may be more flavoursome. Try him on some jars and see if it helps. you may balk at the cost but if you are currently having to throw food away you can consider it an investment.
Have you tried a snack tray? If you put some little snacks like biscuits, half grapes, small chunks of cheese and raisins on a little tray within his reach all day and let him graze he may "discover" food for himself without the specific time pressure of meal times. Don't be disheartened though if he doesn't eat anything, if he's chugging down lots of milk he might not be hungry. You could try replacing some of his milk with water or juice to see if it increases his appetite, but watch that he doesn't just lose weight through not eating and not drinking milk.

His milk will be enough for his nutrients -especially as weight is fine
picky eater -most children are at some point - and getting stressed about it only makes it worse - I speak from expereince with DS1
Just keep offering him different things -and don't worry how much he eats of them
and my DS1 had a very long time where he didn't like breakfast at all - or very little indeed

Thank you for those replies. Tryingtobemarypoppins2 - he has roughly26 oz of milk.

Buffy13 - thank you, makes me feel better when I read about others. Have moved onto 10 month jars, but may try going back to the 7 month ones. I do offer him water with every meal which he totally refuses - have tried several types of cup!!!! May have to go down the juice route I think, especially as he seems to prefer sweeter things.

Like the idea of the snack tray monkoray, will give that a shot this week. Thank you

I was thinking its not so much how much but how often with regards the milk...

I would say, morning milk feed then an hour later breakfast - does he like cerial??

snack - water

Lunch - Have you tried BLW but not with finger foods, just go with anything your having, scrambled egg on toast, pasta and a tomato based sauce, let him get really messy!

2pm ish milk and nap (?) By 1ish aim for water and a snack??

Supper - As above.

Bedtime milk.

Have you read Gill Rapley, Baby Led Weaning?? Well worth it. Good luck xx
