in foods that are known to make kids hyper! ds1 had frosted shreddied for breakfast and then proceeded to run around like a lunatic for about 3 hours!!!! - whenever i got hold of him he was shaking he was that hyper! he is like this with alot of foods but i have done my best to cut out E numbers what else do i need to consider - he dipped his little finger in the sugar bowl at my mums the other day resulting in the same behavior! is that normal?

erm, yes! My dd goes hyper with pure sugar too... Look at the ingredients list for Frosted Shreddies and compare it with "neat" Shreddies- LOADS of sugar.

Why not just give him shreddies without sugar, if he doesn't like it, add a chopped Strawberry or 2 or some chopped banana?

The sugar rush can make kids hyper - they get a quick burst of energy, and then afterwards they can often slump. Children who seem to react to sugar with hyperactivity can be sensitive to salicylates as well (natural food chemicals that occur in lots of fruit and vegetables) - my DS is OK with sugar if he is on a low salicylate diet, but goes out of control if he isn't.

Wow thanks girls i didnt realise how much sugar there was in those frosted shreddies! - hmm how do i get ds on a low salicylate diet - what things do i need to avoid?

try www.goodies.uk.com. they list all the preservatives/colouring etc that should be avoided.

Look out for hidden sugars too, fructose, maltose, glucose, syrup. These are all sugars & often than not cerials (sp) contain many many forms of sugar!
