Party games for 2 year olds?

What party games could we "play" at my 2 year olds party?

We are planning on having it at a large park as our house is tiny.

I've never been to a 2 year olds party before so I haven't got a clue!

Pass the parcel has gone down well at the 2nd birthday parties I've been to. If you are in a park, with no access to a CD player, do you have a friend with a guitar? Or a battery operated CD player / radio?

Apart from that, 2 year olds can't really cope with formal games. Maybe races to the nearest tree or something like that?

Tgger · 14/04/2011 20:20

Pass the parcel- but some 2 year olds are not up for it and in a park could be tricky with the music.

I wouldn't bother with games, they are too young at 2. Bubbles are a winner for 2 year olds, get a machine!

races to win a medal/sticker sweet - walking backwards race, jumping race, egg (potato) and spoon
dancing competition - again prizes and everyone dance
instruments and singing
whats the time mr wolf

Pass the parcel is torture for 2 year olds! Here's a present! Now give it away!

Just have a few children round for some attempts at musical bumps and do the hokey cokey, have some pom bear crisps, have a cake, balloons, bubbles, go home!

ilovedjasondonovan · 14/04/2011 20:46

Don't play games!!

cheapFlower · 14/04/2011 20:47

I wouldn't bother about party games at this age!

I assume you are having a birthday party? just have some nice food and let the kids play freely and enjoy the party. my DD turned 3 recently. we had some lovely cake and some other nice food. I did not arrange party games but the children were just playing with each other. a couple of mums were around as well and while the kids were enjoying themselves, we (mums) had quite a nice relaxed time over a cup of tea and cake.

several of the mums told me later on how much she (as well as their DC) had enjoyed our birthday party and that is was such a nice and stress free relaxing get together.

do agree about pass the parcel, it is hell

I once attended a party where fully half the toddlers were in tears by the end of pass the parcel.

Borrow play tunnels from everyone you know, set them all up and let the kids run around and enjoy themselves.

Rosebud05 · 14/04/2011 21:01

Agree about the hell on earth that is pass the parcel with 2 year olds...

Bubbles - lots of

Ask people to bring outdoory toys eg tunnels, play tents, hula hoops

Running around trees

Collecting leaves

Going to playground

Chasing each other (this can last a LONG time with sugared up 2 year olds)

Sleeping bunnies

Kicking footballs

Singing other songs eg wind the bobbin up

Tgger · 14/04/2011 21:57

Ah yes, those tunnels and tents are great for this age, forgot about that. Singing songs is great if you are that way inclined- we did this.

And pass the parcel is a matter of personality- generally yes not a good idea at this age, mind you there are always exceptions to the rule of which my DD is one, she is a dab hand at pass the parcel and loves it- she's 2.5 and we certainly played it at her party (very small). However, I think I would actually agree with pp that most children this age either can't be bothered with it or find it rather tricky!

Don't know how many children you are inviting but I would say less is more at this age, again matter of personality though Smile

At DS's 2nd birthday party last year they all just played in the garden quite happily - no games at all. If you've got some outdoors toys you can take along like a tunnel, ball, ride on (or two) etc that's probably all you need really. And of course, as someone else has said - plenty of bubbles!

domesticslattern · 14/04/2011 22:04

Organised games for one and two year olds? Noooooooo! It will all end in tears trust me.
Bubbles, balls, tunnels, dancing and general chaos in the park. Yeees!

Plonkerr · 14/04/2011 22:08

Noooo! Party games for 2 yr olds sounds like a nightmare!

Don't torture yourself with it!

exoticfruits · 14/04/2011 22:11

Just let them play. Any games will be for the adult-they don't understand them-domesticslattern has the right approach.

Chica31 · 15/04/2011 19:07

Thanks everyone great ideas. I thought to just let them play, but I felt I needed to "organise"

I am a primary school teacher and taught reception for years, so I love a good sing song. I don't mind making a fool out of myself.

Getting people to bring outdoor toys is a wonderful idea.

We are asking about 6 children and their families.
