dreading christmas

at my wits end-ds aged 4 has the lowest tolerance for frutration known to man. Whenever he gets a new toy-it all ends in tears because it will not do what he wants it to do! it invariably gets thrown and he gets so angry he does not know what to do with himself.
He is a total obsessive-if a piece of his toy becomes broken or worn in any way he cannot bear to play with it anymore
We do not spoil him-he gets presents at Christmas and birthdays-but it is becoming such a nightmare I am already dreading Christmas morning!
just needed a rant! anybody out there have a similar problem?

I can only suggest getting him toys that are very fragile and wont break easily. Toys that dont have lots of little pieces. Bulky jigsaws, books, sorry not much help i have a 4 year old too and have no idea what to get him for xmas sorry.

I have a nearly 6 year old dd1 who is quite obsessive about her toys - eg she got a sylvanian families caravan last year, she set it all out perfectly and then put it on her shelf and never plays with it, just looks at it. No one is allowed to touch it in case things get broken.

Have you asked him what he would like? Do you make sure he gets 'age-appropriate' toys, eg things that arent too hard for him?

I always found little tikes really good strong and take alot of hammering. larsxx

what about something like a bike? or a dvd? something that he can just use... that doesn't have things that might not work

Enid · 03/11/2005 16:09

yes or a scooter
or a mini trampolien

chipkid · 03/11/2005 21:34

got him a bike for his birthday-complete with knee and elbow pads-now he throws a fit if the pads are not positioned as he likes them.!!!
Enid-I hear him piping "I want that" about every toy aimed at boys whilst he watches milkshake on channel 5!-he is obsessed by action hero merchandise particularly if they fire missiles-but these toys are always the most brittle and frustrating!
going to have to give this a lot of thought!

How about making him write a list to Santa explaining what he wants and the writing one back from Santa. The letter from Santa should explain that not all toys are perfect and santa will be upset if he throws, breaks them etc. Dont know if it will work!! We put a note on the trampoline my DD's got last year, the note said "this present is for you to SHARE" Play with it nicely" tThey were thrilled that santa had written them a note and most of the time they play nicely with it.

chipkid · 03/11/2005 22:20

good idea sinqyswife-I regularly tell him that Santa does not bring new toys to little boys who don't look after them!-also tell him to think about the toys on toy story and how happy they were in Andy's room because he was nice to them.
He seems interested in this idea-until he loses his temper again-but will try this
trampoline might not be a bad idea!

dont worry about him saying he wants everything he sees, they are just an advertisers dream at that age. ds1 is 6 and regularly asks me to buy mr muscle/aa membership (because they dont only send one man, they send a hundred!)/a new set of kitchen knives/new curtains etc etc cos he has seen them on tv. i have had to ban bid up tv, its just not worth the nagging.

can you try teaching him some calming techniques like slow breathing or counting? ds doesnt always remember but it does help sometimes when he is getting frustrated (you will probably have to remind him to do it)

chipkid · 04/11/2005 09:55

lol at the aa membership! my ds kept telling me that he wanted geox shoes because they had holes in the bottom-hadn't the first idea what he was talking about until a few weeks later when I saw the advert!!!
I have similar difficulties with frustration as ds (threw half-assembled buggy board across the floor as instructions made no sense!!!) so I am totally responsible for this character trait!
