Does anyone have any experience of habitual behaviour? DD is just 9 and her current habit (she has had others that haven't lasted as long, like hair twiddling) is to either rub her nose, pick her nose or sort of push her front teeth with her fingers. If you are sitting watching TV with her she can't last more than a minute without doing one of the above. Actually, nail biting too! I have read a few threads on here about similar and mentioned it to our GP who said she would grow out of it or 'give her something else to do with her hands'. Not always easy! If she is writing she rubs with other hand. I have tried to talk to her about it and last night I said let's try and see how long we can go without touching, but she lasted two minutes. I suggested giving her a big cuddle to help her (in other words keeping her arms by her sides) but after 5 minutes she was beside herself and desperate to rub her nose, push her teeth. I am worried that other people (particularly) children will think she is odd and be mean to her, especially with the nose picking bit! She has already said that one of the boys called her names about nose picking (writing all this is making my nose itch!). The GP said not to mention it to her but it's hard not to remind her, especially in public when she standing there, itch, push, rub, pick!!! She is a bright and clever child at school with lots of friends, don't know if this is relevant buy trying to paint a picture.
