but i don't know how i have gone wrong. I don't give him everything he wants. I only buy toys etc for birthdays and christmas. So, this morning it's ds1 birthday who is 10 today. I have bought him a digital camcorder thingummy and ds2 who is 6 has had a complete sobbing tantrum that it's unfair that he hasn't got one etc etc.
He asked for a bike for his birthday and got one, a special one that he wanted from america (he's into bmx and extreme sports etc). It cost the same as we spent on ds1.
He has really spoilt the morning. What am i doing wrong??

These things happen, no need to assume you have gone badly wrong, but no one's perfect

it would need to be sustained bratty behaviour to be a real issue, wouldn't it?

I think that sounds quite normal. When you are six I think you are quite self centered and feel sorry for yourself when it's a siblings birthday and they are getting all the attention/presents. I think it is just one of the learning experiences in life that they have to understand and get through. Certainly doesn't sound like a 'spoilt brat' to me. XX

agree with the others...
when we were little my brother and i used to give each other a little gift on our birthdays so that we never really felt left out!
it wasn't anything major... just a little token present so we each had something to open

My almost seven year old dd can be a bit like this when her older sister or younger brother get things - particularly if my mum brings things for one and not the other (which she does, with my approval, if she sees something appropriate for just one of the kids). She has to be reminded that she often gets things too. It's partly personality and partly her age - she's certainly not spoilt. Don't worry about it mugface, he will learn to control his emotions as he gets older (even if it means internalising the "it's not fair" feelings!!)
