Help - DS(7) has become scared of everything

This is really odd he's always been a bit of a scared child but it's getting ridiculous and I have no idea how to deal with it. During the day he's terrified of bees and wasps (he's never been stung by any and he's never been with anyone who has). Bedtime - so far this evening he's got up in tears because there's been a shadow and the second time there was something on his roof.

Last night he could hear a plopping noise. Or there's a shadow in his room. or a black spot on the ceiling. Or a noise in the hallway.

He's begging me to let him sleep with me (which he has never done) or find him another bed in another room, or can I go and sit upstairs with him.

I don't think it's delaying tactics as he is really sobbing (well not now, I haven't left him sobbing to consult mumsnet lol) and distressed but what to do? I don't want to be harsh and say get over it but I don't want to pander it and make it worse argh

Any advice greatfully received. Thank you.

There is an excellent book - the highly sensitive child, I got it when my DD went through a similar phase - hers was based mainly on fears of the weather - wind - things being blown away, rain - flooding fears, sunshine - too hot, fear of sunburn. But the dark, noises, all sorts were causes of anxiety, and clinging/sobbing. It really was a phase, seemed to last forever at the time (!) but I just kept explaining everything, reasoning with her, asked others to reiterate what I had said...it did diminish. Fingers crossed for your DS, chin up!
