Question about the Sunderland urine test?

This is a question for anyone else who has had the test done for their child whilst still in nappies. (Ruty perhaps?)

Thanks to Jimjams (as she was) we contacted the ARU at UoS and recieved the forms. Sent them off. Not heard anything back so rang and the woman said we should get the pack soon but that we would likely find it very difficult to obtain the sample as DS is still in nappies. She explained that is really needs to be first morning urine.

Anyway, what I'm trying to ask is how did anyone else get around this situation. Are there some sort of liners I can buy to collect the sample?

I may need to bump this a few times to attract the attention of anyone with said experience, so apologies to those with no interest in this thread.

Wake child early, remove night nappy, use one of those little bags you put over their penis, reapply new nappy.

But as littlies wee all night - what is first morning urine anyway!

Thanks for the quick reply Bobbybob.
Sorry to be thick, but what little bags are they? Can I gat them from the chemist?

The chemist should sell them - we get them from our doctors. They have a sticky foam bit that goes around the penis (looks as if you could stick the whole scrotum in there - but don't do that) and then a long plastic bag. Once weed in, you simply remove and snip the bottom of the bag to let the wee out into the collection pot.

i got the bags for dd from doctors, or you can put a pad in their nappy and suck it out with a syringe (lovely fun wouldnt recomend it) bags the best bet, dont know if they do them in chemist tho, might be an idea to phone doctors and see if you can grab soem from their!!!

hi homemama - only just saw your post! It is a bit difficult - what we did is i took off his nappy first thing in the morning, and basically just waited with a clean plastic cup!`I manage to catch some on the third occasion i think, enough to send off. I heard about the bags, but my doc didn't have them. Maybe try them tho if you can get them. Good luck!

ds1 was still in nappies when tested. We all woke up at the crack of dawn and trailed after him with the pot-dh caught it. Have just contacted them about doing ds3 so will have the same problem.

homemama · 31/10/2005 19:27

Thanks Ruty, looks like I'll be using cups too. Phoned Drs surgery and after checking with Dr, the receptionist said that they(the bags) are only given out for tests approved by the doctor and not for private tests which in her words, 'we've taken it upon ourselves to do.'
Oh well! We await the sample bottle and then the fun begins!
BTW, so glad to hear your Ds is pointing now-you must be overjoyed after all the worry. We're resisting MMR calls at the moment. Feel sure that DS has the leaky gut problem as his digestive system doesn't seem great (ave 6 pooey nappies a day, occas. blood in stools, stools greasy and full of undigested food)
I presume you didn't go for the MMR. Did you worry about the single measles jab? Did it affect him? Sorry about all the questions.

Thanks for all your help too, Bakabat. I'll let you both know the outcome of the test.

homemama paul shattock at sunderland is BRILLIANT [thanks to bakabat i found about him and managed to speak to him.] When you get the results of the test email him or give him a call and he will give you a rundown of the what the tests show about your ds's gut. It does sound like he is still having gut problems. I am going to delay singles until he is three. I am worried about exposing him to measles, but I feel for him the risk of any measles jab may be much bigger than for most children. If he hadn't had the gut problems we would be going ahead with singles in the next few months. I got some medical advice on this. I do hope others whose children are not high risk go ahead with the singles or MMR so that the risk of measles is not too high, but i can't control that unfortunately. My ds is on a more even keel now, we are very strict about his and my diet, and we still mix breastfeeding with neocate. But i don't want to rock the boat now he is recovering. You will know if your ds's gut is 'leaky' when you get the sunderland results, and then you can make a decision about the jabs. HTH

homemama · 01/11/2005 11:46

Thanks Ruty. If he has no problems (which I fear is very unlikely) then I'll have no probs going ahead with the jab. I think we may end up opting for singles and a delay.

I'll post on here when we get the results and let you know.
