Cant Pull to standing

Hello

DS is 11 months old. Generally i dont have any development concerns and no problems have been identified at check ups. However he has been quite late on some of the gross motor skills related to mobility. He sat unsupported from 5 months. However never had any tummy time until 7 months hated it. Started rolling consistently at 9 months (did it a few times at 4 but as i say hated being on stomach). Only started crawling on all fours about 3 weeks ago (although quite good at it now). Can also get self into and out of sitting position.

However... he is desperately trying to pull to stand and has been trying for the last 3 weeks. He can pull upto his knees now very well but just cant seem to take the next stage to pull up onto his feet. Just doesnt seem to have the strength in legs. He can support all his own weight standing up if he is leaning against the soft (not cruising though).

Do you think the delay in pulling to standing is due to late crawling, before that really sat on bottom and not much else. He is also very long 96th Percentile.

Any thoughts appreciated. Was researching and they all seem to be doing this much earlier?

I don't know really, but a friend of mine has a very long/tall little boy, and the doctor mentioned to her that he would probably be slow in standing and walking due to this. It must be easier for the little compact ones! Smile

thanks - when she was not crawling and went for the 9th month check the ped commented that the late crawlng might be partly due to length. Although thought more down to her personality. She is now very mobile on all fours so happy with that. She just cant seem to get a grip on the floor with her feet to push up - but is standing on her knees if you know what i mean. She is quite skinny as well (in a healthy way), long and thin!

11 months isn't that late and if he's getting to his knees well, all the practise he's getting trying to pull up will help strengthen his legs. DD is 2 in a couple of weeks and not walking unaided yet... she didn't sit till 10 months and although she first rolled at 8 months, she didn't roll much until 10 months too. She started commando crawling at 14 months and proper crawling at 16 months.

Ho hum. All things come to those that wait.

Is it a girl or a boy?? In your first post it's a boy and in your second it's a girl!

FanjoForTheMusic · 06/04/2011 20:34

Hello Alice,
DD is 9.5 months, so a little bit behind your DS age-wise. She sat unsupported at 6 months, but has always hated tummy time and she can't crawl at all. She still only ever rolls in her cot (not on the floor), and only from back to front.

She is 91st centile for length.

Not offering any help, but it sounds like our DCs are similar! The HV says there's nothing to worry about. Smile

my dd was tall, and very late with everything.

couldn't sit up unaided till 10 months!

never went on her tummy, or rolled over ever. crawled late, walked late at 20/21 months!,

i really wouldn't worry, they don't 'all' do things earlier!!

Firawla · 06/04/2011 20:56

one of mine didn't pull to standing til about this age either, something like 11 or 12 months (i should be able to remember its really not that long ago!), like yours he would support if we put him there but wasn't able to get himself into that position, but he did get it eventually and he can cruise now although still not walking. he is also very tall something like 99th percentile. i do think generally the more larger children children can be slower with mobility cos they have more to balance etc? the ones who you see walking @ 9, 10 months are normally the small and light ones ime

MerryMarigold · 06/04/2011 21:03

My niece only started walking at 19-20months and didn't cruise/ stand a whole lot before. She is pretty large! My dd is tiny and walked at 12 months, so I think it is sometimes weight related.

I have twins b/g and dd crawled a lot later than her twin brother but walked first, so it doesn't always follow that some develop 'faster'. She rolled first, he crawled first, she walked first, they both talked at the same time!!!

piratecat · 06/04/2011 22:28

my dd was tall but very slight. she also has hypermobility in her joints, not to a huge extent, but she is more bendy than the norm.

surelynotnormal · 06/04/2011 22:51

My DD1 was just like this. 91st centile for height, 98th for weight. Hated tummy time, sat at around 5 months and stayed there!

She eventually rolled at 10 months, crawled at 11 months and started pulling up at 13 months - walked unaided at 14 months. So ended up being pretty average with walking despite her propensity for sitting around.

She also has double jointed hips which I think caused the delay with crawling and standing. We saw a pysio at around 10 months who made sure we got her to do lots of standing - try putting your DS at a low table and getting him to play with things on it - that should strnegthen his legs.

She's 2.8 now. Bright and exceptionally verbal and has been for a long time. In fact she had quite a few words long before she moved.

DD2 is 9 months and not crawling, pulling up, crusing etc! She doesn't mind tummy time and has had loads of it, after my experience with DD1 I've been very hot on it! She can round in a circle to get things but can't go forwards - can go backwards! She also has double jointed hips.

They are all different, don't worry. My DD1 can do things now that her friends who were much faster with motor skills can't - e.g. she's been going up and down stairs all on her own for months now but her friend has to have someone to help him.

surelynotnormal · 06/04/2011 22:52

Sorry, shouodl have read 91st for weight, 98th for height, npot that it really matters!

homeagainhomeagain · 07/04/2011 08:58

Just want to add, my DD is tiny (really petite) and just turned 11 mo and is at the same stage. She can't pull to standing, goes on her knees, gets stuck and screams until you help her stand up. Joy... She's my second and I think this is pretty much average for this age in terms of development.

I know you've heard this before but it's true, they are all different and they will get there in their own time.

Try not to worry.

babyjane67 · 07/04/2011 16:17

my dd was late walker.walked unaided a wk before her2nd birthday
she only commando crawled, never cruised or pulled up
she has hypermobility&had2have physio&wears special boots2help her
sounds like yr ds is doing well as hes crawling etc so prob wont be long til he takes that next step
its prob just confidence:)

babyjane67 · 07/04/2011 16:18

shes also above average4height!lol

alice732 · 07/04/2011 19:21

many thanks all

he is trying to pull up all the time and starting to swing his foot round to the front to get leverage but just dont think he is strong enough yet on lower legs. He is standing on his knees if you know what i mean without any support and couldnt do that a couple of weeks back so hopefully strength is building up from the newly discovered crawling.

My DS is 7months (just) and cant sit unaided, well he sits then wobbles then falls over. As he is long, HV said not worry. Its so hard though, and it seems as if every baby l now see can sit unaided!!! Happy in jumperoo and sits on knee and in high chair fine, rolling everywhere.
Anyone had a similar experience? No teeth yet either

Katy1368 · 10/04/2011 19:16

Alice - don't worry, my DD didn't pull up to stand until she was 14-15 months so I think you are way early to worry. At a year she couldn't even stand on her feet when pulled up. She turned out to bum shuffle and was a very late walker 20 months with no probs now. Like you DS she always took ages with her gross motor skills, it's just the way she was.
