Sudden bedwetting at 4 years old

My DS is 4.5 years old and has been dry at night and out of nappies since he was around 3ish. He had never wet the bed until very recently, and this last week he has wet the bed every morning. The time varies between 3am and 6am.

He seems fine. No illnesses, no change to routine that I can think of. He is at pre-school 4 times a week where he is happy and has lots of friends. He plays happily with his friends when they come to play and I've not noticed any changes in his relationship with his 2 year old brother.

So, I'm a bit stumped. We've dealt with the bed-wetting by giving him cuddles and reassurance. I've tried to find out if there is anything bothering him and he said he is fine.

Any ideas? Is this a normal phase of development?

Bedwetting is quite common, dd2 is 4 and she still has the occasional incident. I try not to give her drinks before bed etc. Sometimes she is in such a deep sleep that I don't think she realises that shes wetting the bed!

Is it common for it to happen even where it has not previously been a problem? He decided himself at around 3 that he wasn't going to wear nappies at night and hasn't had any accidents until now. That is why I'm a little concerned. I will certainly not be worried if this is just one of those things.

I don't know how common it is but my ds1 started doing it at around 5.5 years. We never told him off but we didn't let him get into our nice warm bed while we changed his bed -so there was no punishment but we were careful not to introduce an incentive to wet the bed ifyswim. It stopped after a couple of weeks. We still get the occassional accident at nights from both boys if they have been on any medication - eg calpol piriton - it seems to make them sleep deeper and not wake up for a wee.

Hi
I know this thread is now old - but I have the exact same problem as llareggub.

My LO is 4 and has been dry for about a year and a half - but suddenly wet at night for the last couple of weeks. She was ill in the middle of these weeks with high temp and swollen glands (which the dr gave her penicillin for) but at first i put the wetting down to the illness. now we have finished the penicillin and still wetting the bed.

Wondered how you got though your problems in the end??
Anyone got any help?

I've just seen this thread too. DD (3.5) has been dry at night for over 6 months and in the past she maybe had an accident once every 2 or 3 weeks but this week it's been every night. Last week she was ill and went back into nappies for 3 nights (at her request) because she wanted to sleep and not be woken up with a wet bed. She did actually wake up with the nappy on and ask for wees and had a dry nappy every night!

I'm wondering now if her body is recovering from being ill and she is sleeping too deeply to wake up. It always happens about 3am.

Does anyone have any tips or do we just have to ride it out? DP wants to put her back into nappies but i feel strongly this is a step backwards.

Similar happened to my ds. he had a foreskin infection and needed treatment. The doctor said that it is not usual for a child who's been dry for so long to suddenly start wetting the bed (ie not just a one off) without a reason, and should always be checked out.

By the second day of treatment he didn't wet the bed again-and it was 1-2 every night for the week he had it. We were away and initially I just put it down to extra tiredness and being away.
