Are all shoes for young girls mary jane style?

Hmm

I always ask if they have something more 'closed' but all I get is wierd looks and boys shoes brought out. Even a pair in red would be a step in the right direction.

So, she is in boys shoes for now but she's not quite 2 yet (I just think they look more practical and comfortable, especially in winter).

I got very annoyed about the lack of choice esp. in the winter - we were told boots were the only closed style!

sarahtigh · 04/04/2011 21:12

girls shoes are a nightmare either black or pink unless spend loads of money my 16 month old DD is wearing black patent boots summer choices seem to be white with sparkles or biubblegum pink with sheep!!!! she might be in boys shoes soon!! just more practical and match everything pink shoes look so silly with red and green dress for example

who else apart from clarks and startrite make proper shoes but without breaking bank? I am not paying more than £30ish for shoes and would prefer £20

candleshoe · 04/04/2011 21:17

I bought some £45 shoes for DD because I wanted a colour other than black or pink - sadly they fell apart in less than 8 weeks! Hummph

tethersend · 04/04/2011 21:22

These are nice if you change the laces. Also in beige and floral. But again, change the laces.

candleshoe · 04/04/2011 21:29

Liking the red!

BikeRunSki · 04/04/2011 21:37

A few toddler girls I know wear boys shoes for all these reasons.

monkoray · 04/04/2011 21:39

Nike do some very cute unisex trainers (we have a retail outlet near us and I got a pair of size 5s for £10)

tethersend · 04/04/2011 21:41

They did some silver ones last year which DD had... I think I'll get her a red pair this year.

candleshoe · 04/04/2011 21:44

tethersend - You are the first person to say they know it!

herethereandeverywhere · 04/04/2011 21:44

I agree. It's also much harder to get a decent fit if they have wide feet (DD is H+) because the strappy bits all cut in. And I never realised how many vile shades of bubblegum pink existed until I started shopping for toddler shoes. Bluugghhh!!!

Hulababy · 04/04/2011 21:49

Try and independent children's shoe shop. Much more choice there, esp from the European makes.

tethersend · 04/04/2011 22:33

If we're wrong to like 70s gems full of misplaced nostalgia and polarising the world into good and evil, then hell- I don't wanna be right!

kreecherlivesupstairs · 05/04/2011 08:11

herethere, it is equally difficult if your DD has skeletor feet. We really struggle to find anything to fit, let alone decent quality shoes.
Currently DD is wearing a pair of silver sequinned baseball boots. She would give an organ for a pair of converse all stars, but her feet just slop around in them.
Sandals soon and the joy of finding a pair that both fit and she'll wear.

DilysPrice · 05/04/2011 08:16

Startright did One pair of closed shoes for girls last year. Clarks did none. I know this from an emergency shopping trip when it started snowing. Clarks gets much better once you're past size 2. (Bootleg brand I think)
But one of the trainer companies (poss Converse) do a good unisex pair of plain black leather shoes which I think I'll go for next year.

transferbalance · 05/04/2011 08:18

school shoes are the worst
apparently there isn't the demand for closed in shoes for girls, I asked about it once

savoycabbage · 05/04/2011 08:28

Kreecher, my dd has Skeletor feet too and we always get Timberland sandals here which always fit quite well.

kreecherlivesupstairs · 05/04/2011 09:56

savoy, I like those, DD would reject them. Generally we manage to find a pair of Geox or ecco that she will wear. I find that if they have velcro on they will normally pull tightly enough to stabilise her foot ITMS.

Chundle · 05/04/2011 13:19

I'm so glad dd gets peidro boots from mobility centre we get to choose from 100s of styles and all free ;)

septemberchild · 06/04/2011 18:52

My dd wore these www.pedoodles.com/product.php/50/9/ until last year when she out grew their sizes, they are fantastic :)
I'm really struggling to find her shoes that she likes now she's 6 as she hates the stiffness of clarks and startrite!

septemberchild · 06/04/2011 18:52

oops! Here's the link again! www.pedoodles.com/product.php/50/9/

migola · 06/04/2011 19:47

I know what you mean OP, it drives me nuts. HOwever, DD had these last time - I didn't even know hush puppies did kids shoes, and not ridiculousy expensive either

although weather getting nice now [hopeful]

purpledragonfly · 06/04/2011 19:50

OP - you can put your toddler in trainers - these are closed and you can get girls or boys.

My DD is a little older and I am also very cross about the lack of closed shoes. She is currently wearing boys black shoes.

stressheaderic · 06/04/2011 22:27

I like the look of quite a few of the Hush Puppies. Can you buy them in shops, rather than online? If so, where? Do they fit them instore ?

migola · 07/04/2011 08:13

hi stresshead, yes I bought my DD's in an independent shop and they were fitted properly instore. Am in east sussex..
