When did your child really start to smile...

My DS is 8 weeks and though he will give us the odd little smile and will interact lots with us he doesn't regularly smile or in response to my smile. When do most children start to smile properly - any tips?

Remember that at this age your DS's sight still isn't that great so he might not really register that you're smiling. My DS has been smiling since about 6 weeks, mostly in response to toys and sounds. He loves singing and smiles a lot if I sing and dance with him.

Are you worried or just curious?

Yeah Writer is right, eye sight is so under developed that i really wouldn't worry. They can't copy what they can't see. Try to use noises and loud colours to see if you get some sort of reaction - When you realize what stimulates your little one keep doing it and eventually this will lead to a great big smile :)

He started smiling really early, but more like he was practising than anything and you really had to catch his attention just right. I remember 10 weeks being a massive turning point when he would smile socially all the time and at anyone and everyone. It was literally like a light went on almost overnight and everyone commented on it.
