Grunting in sleep? Is this normal?

My son is 8 weeks old and grunts so much at night, especially in the early hours around 3 - 4 ish onwards. He is still fast asleep but I and my husband are not! He will go to sleep peacefully and when in deep sleep is quiet it just seems to be when he is lightly sleeping?
could there be something wrong or is this normal? We do struggle with gas with him and use infacol all the time and gripe water at night. He is breast fed but we have recently introduced a formula feed at night, he was rinting before this but seems worse now.

Hi,
My daughter is now 7.5 months.
For the first 3 months she used to wake us up throughout the night by grunting, wheezing and making noises.
Looking back now I wish someone had told me how noisy baby's really are when they sleep!!
It started off quite gently but increased with the weeks until about 3 months then the bigger she grew the less noise she made.
From my experience this is perfectly normal. A midwife I spoke to suggested placing a small blanket under the head end of her mattress.
I tried it and it did help slightly but I soon stopped as I grew used to the noise. In the end I began to enjoy listening to the sounds she made as she slept, it mean't I could feel close to her without having to get up to look.
My little one is breastfed and has never had formula so I don't think that would be causing it. Hope this helps.

Hi Ali,

My older son did a lot of grunting in the early hours too. Like roz's daughter he was only breastfed. DS2 is now 7 weeks and has been congested/snotty in the early hours since 2 weeks old! His bowels tend to be more active then too. He always poos during or after early morning feeds. It does tempt me to move him to his own room sooner than planned, but there are still good reasons to keep him with me a while longer. Hope things get better soon for you!
