My lovely 5 year oldDD1 is in reception and loves it and is a really enthusiatic reader but had only just moved on to level 2 in the oxford reading tree series, where i know that plenty of children in her class are reading at higher levels, should i be worried, her teacher said the "some other children are at the same level" as my DD, which made me feel even more worried as its only some argghhh - I am being a silly paranoid mom? My DS, who is now in year 7, did not get reading until he was in Year 3 so i do have reson to be a littel worried - although she is much more enthusiastic than he ever was!

pengimum i really wouldnt worry about it at this age,5 is still very young and all children are different.my ds1 is 6 and in yr 1 and he has just gone on to level 4 of the oxford reding tree.he was also on stage 2 in reception.ds friend in same class is on level 10 although another is on stage 2 so it varies immensley at this age.as long as dd is trying her best and is enjoying reading i wouldnt worry too much. :)

p.s i too am a "silly paranoid mum" Grin

nothing wrong with that-it comes with the territory :)

My dd is 5 and got her first level 3 book last week. Some in her class been on level 3 a month and some are still on level one, so huge variation.
Level 2 sounds fine for me and is actually a little ahead on government guidelines I believe

Those ORT books are dire. Would you want to read them? It bored me rigid doing them with the dds instead of the fun imaginative books we were used to.

OP - you need to chill out. Your dd is learning to read - great! The aim of reception is for children to learn how to put their pants on after PE, sit on the carpet for 5 minutes without implosion and find that there are other children they like playing with and that it is possible to last even 6 hours without seeing mum or dad. That's it.
Ignore what level she's on and tell anybody who asks that you have no idea because strange to say it will NOT govern the rest of her life Grin

Ds is only just sounding out CVC words (nearly 5) and I'm not worried. It is supposed to still be about play at this age.

My DS1 is 4.5 and in Reception. They dont do any formal reading at this age at his school as far as I am aware, they dont introduce it until Yr1. So any level she is on is good in foundation stage!

I help out in my DD's reception class and most of the children are on level 2, with a few still on level 1. My DD is level 3 but she is the only one so far [proud emoticon]

What im saying is that about 25 of the 30 children in DDs class are on level 2! Your DD is doing great! DDs teacher told us to just concentrate on OUR dd and where she is up to, never mind the other kids. :)

And i agree that the ORT books are dull!!!

Pengimum · 03/04/2011 21:13

Thank you all very much i feel tons better, Northernlurker u r right the ORT books are so dull, i have already been all the way through them with my DS when he was at primary...i sld stop listening to all the Alpha Mummies bigging up their kids and be proud that DD1 loves school and has loads of mates xxxx
